Socoder -> Off Topic -> A "big" project

I was thinking about that yesterday:
a huge website... in various languages like Italian, English, German ecc... full of tutorials and code examples...
It is a big project since this should involve a lot of people!
I think this would be great, because of its originality: there doesn't exists a multy-language archive of samples/tutorials!

I want to do that. I want to create a website like it... but I need help.
I am looking for:
-An html-php coder... who can works with me...
-A webdesigner... to create an original fance-looking website!
-English/American c++,c,php,html,ruby,phyton and blitz coders!
-Swedish c++,c,php,html,ruby,phyton and blitz coders!
-German c++,c,php,html,ruby,phyton and blitz coders!
-France c++,c,php,html,ruby,phyton and blitz coders!
-Espanish c++,c,php,html,ruby,phyton and blitz coders!
And (if there are) Russian, Greek ecc... coders.

Also I want to create a small place where coders can search for teams/jobs ecc...

What do you think?

P.s. I think we must create this place out of So-Coder... which is a too small community...
P.s1. pantanellar@gmail.com to contact me!
P.s2. If you came from dev-crunch (or BB.com ecc...) you can join to this project without problem!

No. It's been tried before by people much more qualified than you, and nothing good ever came out of it.

As for a coder job-search, there are plenty of those already.

Hmmm...

To generalised.

"Oooh, a programming site!
What's that question? What Language do I speak?
C++, of course!
What? Nobody speaks C++ here?
Dammit, that sucks.
What is this 'Cymraeg' programming language?"

Think of the confusion!

ingenium,

you have insulted Jay, our home Socoder,
and the rest of us here.
Yes, at Socoder we may not see eye to eye at times
and yes we have our disagreements and ups and downs.
But its our home and home away from home.

Yet, either apologize to Jay
or look somewhere else.

I don't count it as an insult.

To be honest, I see 2 main problems here

1) Is that Ingen's asking for help writing articles from a forum that has a total of 17 articles.

2) Slightly bigger. This site wasn't built because I wanted to get "loads of peeps on my site!"
It was built because some idiot closed BC, then another idiot closed CW.
We needed a forum.
I felt it was my duty to build this site. That even though another group had built a forum (Which also then vanished), we needed to have somewhere up and running for all the Showcases, Articles and what-nots.
That's why this site exists.
Not out of some popularity thing, but because we all needed it.

okay, Jay.
Maybe it needed to be said or maybe not.

I'm walk away from this
with dirt on my face...and rightly so.
It was just the manner in which he said/posted it.

You and your smiley seemed
shocked and sad a little, though.

@Hobo: I can't understand the point of your post...
If you weren't ironical then:
What's that question? What Language do I speak?
C++, of course!
What? Nobody speaks C++ here?
Dammit, that sucks.

I was not referring to the program language... but to the language (English ecc...)... I am not seraching someone who speaks C++ but someone who speaks English and another different language.
If you were ironical: can you explain where is the funny part of your post?

@PowerMousey: I didn't insult anyone! This is a forum, I don't want to transform a forum in a big archieve...
and PLEASE stop to write in that odd way... I find really hard to understand what you write because I am not English!

@Nolan:
No. It's been tried before by people much more qualified than you, and nothing good ever came out of it.

Who tried it? Where? How can I contact them?

As for a coder job-search, there are plenty of those already.

Where are those website? Are you referring to Game-Dev? plz don't make me laugh...

I'm sure I did a post, but it doesn't appear to have appeared. I'd be willing to help, but you should remember you'd be suffering from the same problem that's killing DevCrunch. Where do you get the articles from?

The translation into multiple languages would be the easy bit.
Sat, 14 Apr 2007, 09:21
ingenium1
Well... each member of the "team" will create some (a number to define ) articles, then the others will translate it in their own language.
For example, if there are 8 members and we decide that each member has to create 3 articles/tutorials during a month we will have:
8 x 3 = 24 articles
That means we will have about 6 articles each week... 1 article each day...

What do you think?

no. but its just that I have tried something like that before amd after a little bit I found out that it was too big of a project for me. Im not saying that you cant do it. just start small and get a basic something working and then make it bigger. If you take on a huge project all at onece you may get overwhelmed. gook luck though.

Hmmm... well, I think you all want to see a working website, in which there are 4-5 articles and tut before join to the party...
Well, I think I will make this website in about one or two weeks... I will be back on this thread I promise.
In the meantime if anyone wants to help me, just send a pm or an email to me!

Why don't you first try to get a group togethor and get those 24 articles written. Then when you create the site don't post them all from the start, maybe only half at most. Then you can continue to release these articles whilst trying to get more, and the site won't look dead.
Sat, 14 Apr 2007, 11:13
PieMan
Make the 24 articles before doing anything, then make the website and release 1 a month, that's like no work for 2 years!!!!

I would suggest if you want to do this, advertising to other coders would be a good idea

Sorry, I was just making a crap pun on the word language, meaning both programming and culture/language. I was just being a little silly but, perhaps, you don't need separate (spoken) languages sections - just, for example, code snippets could have a choice of documentation (spoken) language but still be the same function.

See, with two meanings of the word language to look out for, I'm making even less sense than usual trying to cope

Like Mike_G said, use Google and you'll find answers very quickly.

Why would you laugh at Game-Dev? It's a huge community, and it's simple job-search does a lot of good. I don't mean to be insulting, but nothing you could make would ever have the popularity and success that Game-Dev's job search does.

Just think about the proportions of this project. For each programming language, you'd need an speaker of each natural language that you want to support. So tell me this: where do you plan to find such a huge number of experienced programmers?

Bottom line: It won't happen. I don't like being so pessimistic, but I feel that it's better to stop an unrealistic project rather than letting it fail.

I think we didn't understand each other:
I am not searching a skilled coder in every program languages!
I explain: if a german coder (who knows only [ex.] Html) creates a tutorial about html, it will be ok because i will translate it in Italian, then I will create a tutorial about C (and in this example I know only C) and the german programmer will translate it into detusch! So eventually we will have 4 articles:
Detusch articles:
Html-C
Italian articles:
Html-C

This project isn't so hard! I need only someone who speaks another language and knows at least one program language!
