I just watched Man Lab with James May on YouTube. Does anyone know if duelling is still permitted in the UK?
I believe they have pesky regulations here (Norway) that forbids settling disputes by agreed-upon violence, but I should hope that is not the case overe there?

I think that would depend whether or not the guns and/or bullets are real, there's now law about throwing tennis balls, or any other kind of softish ball, at each other which could be classed as dueling I suppose.

I was assaulted at work by a patient a few years ago and one of the first things the police officer asked me when being interviewed was "Did you ask/invite him to assault you?" The officer stated that they have to ask all victims this question just in case the perp stated that the victim said "Well come on then" inviting violence, or something similar. If this is the case, the police won't take matters any further.

Sooooooo... I would expect that any competition where people take a pop at each other are seen to be authorised by the participants (eg boxing, wrestling) and so the police probably wouldn't be involved and certainly wouldn't take it to court. However there would still be rules about what is and isn't acceptable within that activity.

As for duelling - I doubt that is legal with anything other than a spud gun nowadays!

What would happen if one party died though? Would the living person be charged with manslaughter? I think the safest thing would be for both participants to sign a document beforehand.
Honestly though, I don't really see why a consenting adult should be charged with manslaughter if he can produce sufficient evidence (video?) that the slaughtered was consenting.

(I realize that video can be faked, but it is relatively hard, unless one party is forced.)
I believe a video + a witness (which there would be anyway, due to the rules of duelling) should be sufficient.

It has happened in boxing and as far as I'm aware the other party was never charged with anything, let alone manslaughter.

That's ludicrous!
That's saying "yeah, we don't mind dueling so long as it happens in hand to hand combat"! >_<

There should probably be some limits on the type of weaponry allowed though. By the original rules, I could demand that we attack each other with atom bombs if a glove was thrown at me, and then both parties would be obliged by honour to either build or obtain one each and attack.

I saw this topic and had a laugh- My housemate and I actually took that quote and made a really crappy song with it:

https://eternalinfamy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Him_And_The_Armenians_TheDuel.mp3 (Warning: sudden James May attack)

...also, Duels are a weird legal ground. Since most of them are carried out in private, I think it's kind of a code that you don't involve the police if one of you were to die, otherwise I'm sure just the act is breaking a lot of public endangerment / peace laws.

I think that's the point and the difference - in boxing death isn't expected (although every boxer knows that this is a possibility), in duelling death probably is.
