You might be surprised after how the media goes on about it, but I'd say 99% of all protests are peaceful (though often ignored!). I've been on a fair number, but the worst I've ever seen was a bit of paint and a few cracked windows when I went on the 700,000 strong trade-union demonstration earlier this year (of course those cracked windows was all the media talked about!).

The occupy protesters outside St. Pauls cathedral wanted to march to join our protest actually, but the police kettled them so that they couldn't leave (and arrested nine) which is a bit sad.
