Socoder -> Off Topic -> Should PM's be Mod Readable?

Sun, 17 Sep 2006, 07:51

(Need Polls.. Can't be arsed making Poll code..)

PM, the idea is in the name. PRIVATE messaging.
But if people are able to hide things from mods, is that a good idea?

People could use the PM system as a way to discuss Site Hacks, and other such things.

Given the Private nature of PM's, though, I'd prefer not to have to allow Mod access to them. But I feel I have a duty to allow access, just in case.

I'm not sure.

What are your opinions on the subject?

Well, nothing on the internet is private... however, i'm just about on the same part of the fence as you jnk. You have ultimate ability to access the entries via the SQL server if you suspect anyone, so maybe we should just leave it private.

I think mod-readable is fine - it's your site, and if you don't want certain things discussed, you should be able to stop the discussion of it.

PMs should be used to communicate on something that would otherwise fill up the forums with posts that have no relevence to anyone else, not to have private uber H4X0R 1337 chat.

Right, the PM's are pretty much as private as you should expect.
If I feel that I should check up on things, I can do it via raw database access, otherwise it isn't something I can easily peek into.

I think the best thing is that you can look if you want to, but you'll swear not to unless you suspect something.

What if this were not a hypothetical question?

On the topic of the off-topic topic, the "Posts you've read" should just about work fine, now.
Issues may occur when moving and deleting posts, but otherwise it should be fine.

<<on the topic of the off-topic topic>>

on the topic of the topic of the off-topic, semi-on-topic topic about a topic (say that 5 times), what does that have to do with pm's?
