So, Here comes Win7 with it's super wonderful multi-touch super-touch everyone-touchy-touch touchscreen compatibilities.
Frankly, I can't wait.

Thing is, Where the hell are the touchscreens?!

£390+vat's the cheapest I can see for a 19" one.
That's taking the smeg!!!

Within 1 to 4 years I'm betting the majority of laptops will have touch screens. Windows 7 needs to be able to support them, that's why it has touch.

Hate touch screens. They get greasy and your arms get tired!!!

Prediction: flop.

To anyone reading this from the future, I say "told you so".

It's really going to be the same problem that they're having with cell phones -- people like touch screens, and people like keyboards -- but there's not many that combine both very well. Let's face it, the little pads on laptops kinda suck. The little rubber thingy that some have are pretty good imo, but it's no substitute for a regular mouse.

I don't want to be holding my arm up to tap on the screen, either though; if we have touch screens they have to be level/parallel with the table, but I also want my keyboard. If the manufacturers can figure that out then I'll be interested, but until then, meh.

I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. The mouse works perfectly fine, and I like the keyboard! Both are simple, work, and pretty versatile.

Thing is, we had a touchscreen at work for ages (the damn thing borked!! But what can you say, it was already about 3 year old when we got the thing!!)

Touchy was useful.
It didn't replace the mouse. The mouse was still there, as was the keyboard, but.. you found yourself doing certain things with the touchscreen.
Startmenu, closing windows, things like that..
There's a reason "FisherPrice" skin became the standard, and it's exactly for things like that.

I'm with Jay on this. Like how the mouse complements, not replaces the keyboard the touchscreen will complement existing technologies.

Yeah, I think if they can have the keyboard, mouse and touchscreen it would work pretty well. Everyone could use their favorite tool, I guess. If they get limited to one or two, it would be a bit less enjoyable.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe Windows Vista played the same role as Windows ME did. Windows ME wasn't a very effective operating system, despite Microsoft's wishes for it to become popular. Perhaps Microsoft will learn important lessons from Vista - or at least I hope that's what happens. At the time Windows ME was out, there was also Windows NT and 2000, though I never knew out how these co-related with the other editions. This might be the same as the different versions of Windows Vista.

ME was for home, NT was for workstations and 2000 was for servers.

I suppose touchscreens can be useful for certain applications, but it would be silly to replace the mouse and keyboard altogether with such things.
