So I've rented a movie on iTunes. I was browsing around on Digg and found this article on how to hack the new iTunes Movie Rentals system. Apple gives you 30 days after you rent the movie to watch it. Well maybe I want a little longer? This is the normal, iTunes (before the hack): hack_before.png It's a pretty simple hack, just change the date on your computer! Here is iTunes again (after the hack): hack_after.png -=-=- Quit posting and try Google.

LOL! Apple really has to change that, maybe store the date in an encrypted file or omething?

That is a very old hack and nothing new. Most trials are base by the date on your PC and so can be circumvented by changing it. However it gets very annoying to have an incorrect date on you PC. One idea I'd have, why not change the date forward before you download. When you change it back to normal it might have a very long time period. |

The clock battery in my old OS 9 but running OS X mac (not a bad machine, actually) didn't work, so every time it booted up it was January 1, 1970. I assume it would be easier to put your clock forward a few years before downloading, then put it right so you don't need to think about it again.

I'd be interested to know what happens if you hit a +30 day. I'd imagine it'd be a case of itunes deleting the files, or permanently locking them on you. Care to give that a try, Stealth? -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

I assume this ipod rental thing is cheaper than buying the dvd? I only have an old [dead] ipod with the b/w screen so haven't looked at much ipod related in a few years.

@jay When the file does expire it gets deleted. Which is why you have to be careful, if your computer went a-wall on you then you could quite easily whip out all your rentals. @JL235 Good idea but I'm a bit paranoid that iTunes uses the server to embed the date, and that my download will expire instantly if I try that. Plus, I have heard Apple has patched this. So thats unfortunate. But thats the Digg effect, heh. @spinal New release rentals are $3.99 (or $4.99 for HD, although I hear you can only get HD on Apple TV). -=-=- Quit posting and try Google.

can't you just re-encode the video to a different format?

Anything that you can see or hear is impossible to fully protect. even if it comes down to having to videotape the screen, but you wouldn't for this format. What is it? mpeg? mov?
