Going to have to replace the water main from the street into our yard and under the house to about the middle of the house. It has sprung a nasty leak and has disintegrated with age due to being in the dirt. Will post pics in a minute or two. Will cost around $2,000 or just over...

Jeez!

Does that include labour and taxes etc. etc.?

Thankfully, my state does not have sales tax, so if something in a store costs $4.87, that is the price, no tax added. In Tennessee, I would be paying $400 in sales tax on this job...

The work order, what it includes...

Have had friends around the country who have had similar done and they have paid $10,000 - $17,000 depending on how big their front yard is and how much digging needs to be done. Luckily, we have an extremely small front yard.

Why do you need new permits to replace/repair existing plumbing and sidewalk? (I presume this is on your property, not a proper sidewalk running along the house?).

The sidewalk in question is not on our property, it is city property, between our property and the street.

Permits generally work in most places over here if you are repairing something on your property, a permit is not needed, but if you are building something new or putting in something new a permit is needed and often needs to be inspected.

They are running an entirely new line since the old one has disintegrated.

OK. Still a huge chunk of change though

Indeed, and thankfully my Mom sent me a check to cover it for us.

Especially when we are saving $$ to pay the deductible so we can get our roof fixed which was damaged a while back in the storm.

Is storm damage not included in household insurance? Is your water pipe not covered by insurance too?

Water pipe will likely be classified as a maintenance issue, as it was put in in the '40s and being galvanized steel it has deteriorated everywhere it was touched by dirt. We might get lucky and they will pay for it if they think the cold made it burst...

Either way it needs to be fixed now and can't wait on them. Scheduled to be fixed on the 14th and the 15th of this month.

As to the roof, insurance is paying for it to be fixed and for it to be replaced, but they are paying a depreciated value so we will have to cover the difference along with the $2,000 deductible

If they pay for the water pipe, there will be a $1,000 deductible on that as after the roof issue, we had our policy changed to get a lower deductible.
