Funky Chicken

Visit here every day and I keep forgetting to talk about what I'm developing. I do it in odd bursts when time allows so I tend to forget, sorry.

This is what I started last week, following the update to Fusion. A remake of Crazy Chicky, or my verion Funky Chicky. It's mostly going to be a like-for-like at this stage, but has Pac Man ghost-like movement patterns in it. That part was interesting to work out. This could lead on to an 8-bit version as I work out all the workings out but not sure yet.

Nice gfx!

I still have clickteam Fusion on my steam account. This from a humble sale I think. I looked at it for a short time. It was to complicated for me.

There was a old Amos team member in the company I think I read. (But that might be agk I'm confused with.)

Fusion is a weird one for traditional programmers. It has many common programming structures in it now, but the event sheet which is a spreadsheet approach of conditions met --> actions to take is something to get your head around, and the visual nature of it which you use to solve problems requires you to think in a different way sometimes. New users who have no or little programming experience tend to take to it better.

It has the best editors for 2D construction that I've ever found in one application, the latest updates benefit the PLUS + version of Fusion 2.5 more, which is a 'dlc' in Steam so you might not have that with the humble bundle version. The update still adds new things to the regular version of Fusion though.

It was Francois Lionet who wrote STOS and AMOS that joined with Yves Lamourex to make Klik&Play back in the mid 1990's. Both were Amstrad CPC developers and had a few games under their belt. Francois made the Amstrad version of Captain Blood. Francois left clickteam a few years ago and started on AOZ which is a modern AMOS/STOS implementation in Javascript. The AMOS part is mostly there but I know he's not been well for a while so it has slowed down from what I can see. It's also subscription based so while looks really good it is not something I can follow.

Anyway, back on the game, the graphics are from the Dick Smith original game - I have wondered about updating them but I'm too much of a sucker for the 8-bit look so I'm probably going to keep them original.

EDIT: It was actually Yves that did the CPC version, Francois worked on the C64 and PC versions. web.archive.org/web/20000311120801/http://www.sheep-pen.co.uk/tools/clickteam.html

Anything Andy does is awesome looking.

When I moved to Oregon, I had to leave almost everything I owned in Tennessee, including decades worth of software and backups (going back to '79). The one thing I miss most is Jamagic. Such an underappreciated language and so easy to prototype with. Not sure which one of them worked on it, or was it a third guy?

Glad to see they are still plugging along. The only programming software I have left is PowerBASIC and PureBasic. All of my modeling and art software is gone, all I have is an older version of PaintShop Pro.

Ah that sucks Brice. Are you doing anything with BASIC now? There's some decent free stuff out there for making creative things - Jayenkai's JSE for example

Yea, Jamagic was pretty cool that started well but lost momentum unfortunately. It was created both both Francois and Yves but they had this 3D genius at the beginning and I think he drove a big part of the product. Unfortunately he left early on before all the 3D issues / bugs / performance were sorted and the guy that picked it up was never able to get it back on track. The 2D side and the language were great though ... we made Imogen, Sky Hawk and CHOLO with it and it was flexible enough for making anything, I had a pretty neat 2D pixel editor with layers and animation frames (wish I'd focused on that instead of the games). I did install it on Windows 10 recently and it still works fine.

Back to Chicky - I'm pretty much done on the engine - just scoring and end of level plus a bug when you collect a carrot and I turn the foxes around 180 degrees can occassionally cuase their movement to get messed up and go through a solid block. Once that is done I'll make some different mazes, title screen and all the boring stuff.
