What Have You Done - 2019

Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • So many games.

Did everything turn out as planned?
    Nope. Sure didn't.
I abandoned my lovely C++ framework and shifted over to 100% JavaScript gamedev.
I've lost a ton of abilities, and am having to deal with (eeeuw) onscreen controls on mobile/tablet.
But things are carrying on well enough, I think.
The only BIG thing I'm missing is the online leaderboards, but given how piss easy it is to change variables in a browser game, I can't think of a good way to make those hack-proof.

Halfway through 2019 I decided to make a spreadsheet/calendar and try to schedule all the different crazy things that I do each week.
Surprisingly that actually worked pretty well, and for a good couple of months I was actually making 4 games a week! Crazy!!!
I've cut down on that over the advent period, but it felt good to be able to do that, and keeping a schedule seemed to spur me on even further than usual.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Advent Collexion

    Why not?
So many other things going on that I kept putting it off, again and again and again, until it got too late to do anything about it.
I also still haven't gotten into electronics like I wanted to.
    Bah, humbug..

And then there's "Super Secret Side Project"..
That WAS going to be the thing I worked on over Advent, but all the knitting got in the way!
    Maybe next year..?

    2020

    What's the plan for 2020?

You know, I really don't have a clue.
This year didn't really turn out like I was expecting it to, and there's been a ton of detours along the way that I certainly couldn't have planned.

I'll probably try to keep to a regular schedule again, though, since that worked well enough.

Other than that, expect the usual assortment of random games, oddities and more.

Same as last month. And the many months before that.

    Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • Composed a number of songs.
  • Got a bit better at pixelart.

Did everything turn out as planned?

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • There was a period were I was writing music everyday. This somehow did not last very long.
  • With the pixelart I would've wanted to have spend a lot more time getting better with it. I have not really a understanding of shading volumes.

    Why not?
Enough time in the day but not enough muscle.

    2020

    What's the plan for 2020?
  • Programming
  • Composing on the ipad
  • Drawing pixelart
  • Buying study books
  • Using the expensive Korg Kronos
  • Buying a 8 core gaming laptop(3d programming, ai and minecraft!)

Leaving my response to this thread until the very end of the year has not actually altered my response in any meaningful way. Nonetheless...

    Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • Lots of coding at work
  • Playing and writing/running various live roleplaying games
  • A small bit of other coding in my free time

Did everything turn out as planned?
Not sure if the coding at work thing really counts on this list because it's, like, my job - but there's now another game out there with my name in the credits, so that's nice. RPGs continue to fill up a large chunk of my time, and I have definitely spent far more time than is sensible writing a few of them; but they were at least reasonably well received by their players.

I don't really have anything to show for my small amount of programming-for-fun, but it was nice to take part in the Advent of Creativity again this year - I've definitely learnt a thing or two about shaders!

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • As much free-time-programming as I'd like
  • Lots of various small bits and pieces that I probably should've done, but weren't urgent enough and I am bad at motivating myself sometimes

    Why not?
I have a suspicion I wrote this last year too, but while having a games programming job is great, it really does sap your mental energy and enthusiasm for doing more coding as a hobby. The timesink of writing roleplaying games on top of that definitely didn't help!

    2020

    What's the plan for 2020?
  • Try and make / manage time for more hobby programming
  • Inevitably write and run more live RPGs
  • ...Planning in any more depth than that will probably not survive contact with reality
