Xmas Something Something

It's been a long time since we had any kind of proper compo, and I'd love to do something, but every time I try to come up with something, my mind roadblocks me with worries that.. for a fair majority of the users of the site.. we just don't have the time to join in with such a thing.

So, discuss..
What could be attempted?

What might work?

Really would've loved a PlayMyCode compo, but. Fuckitynubbits.
Perhaps we could pick a specific 8bit system, and have like a 10 liner challenge or something!?
*shrugs*

Maybe just a general themed compo would be good, like ludum dare where you can interpret the theme whichever way you see fit. But with a less strict time limit.

Maybe the entree could be anything? A tune, gfx, sfx, code, game, story?

If a Christmas competition goes ahead it's definitely something I should try and make time to enter. The idea of a general themed competition sounds like a good one to me - a theme gives some level of inspiration and consistency to tie the whole thing together. Maybe if it ran from the start of December up until (just before) Christmas, that would give enough time to put evenings into it and get something together.

Thoughts on this...

Advent of Creativity.
Every day over advent, post something new to the supplied topic.

Possibilities.
A poem, or short story.
A piece of music.
A small demo'esque bit of code.
An artsy ProcGen tool.
A set of sprites.
A bunch of sound effects.
A random crazy assed doodle!
Some bizarre photo you just took. (Keep it Clean!!!)
Even just a raw idea that you'll never get around to actually doing anything about, but would like to post about it...

Let's have 24 (25?) days of absolute creativity.
Everyone gets to post one new thing each day, and we see how far we can get..

Thoughts..?

I like this idea, in particular because you can do as much or as little as you want each day - so long as you do something each day. I'm up for this.

8 bit sprites, increasing the bit count by 2 each day, if my math serves me right, we'll be at a gargantuan 58 bits by chrimbo day

Happy coding!

I hate people talking about 8bit gfx. Is it 256 steps per pallet entry or 256 palette entries? 8 bit computers usually had only 16 colours, making it even more confusing...

Right.. Formulating the rules..

New
Post something new each day over Advent.
The "new" thing needn't be entirely new. If you want to start making things now, you can do, but all things should at least have been created for this, and not just some random old stuff you've plucked from the depths of your harddrive.
.. Although if you want to do "Random old stuff I've plucked from the depths of my harddrive", that might make for a nice addition each day.. Hmm.. I might do that!!

Thing
You can post literally anything.
Screenshots, photos, gifs, code, poetry, a nice short story. Anything goes, as long it's created for this.

Theme
You needn't stick to any particular theme. Although this is an "Advent Calendar", you've no need to stick to a xmas'y/snowy/santa set of imagery. God knows, our years of Lego/etc calendars have barely stuck to the theme!

Scoring?
I'm tempted to add some kind of scoring mechanism. 1 point for your first "thing", 2 for the next day, and combo'ing up to 24. Miss a day and it resets to 1.
But that might be unfair to those of us who are too busy on any given day.
As always, thoughts welcome.

Winner/Prize/Judging/etc
Is this a competition?
I'm not sure if it is.. But it might be, especially if I add scoring..?!
Let me know if you think that it is..

There's absolutely no way I can enter something everyday - working shifts, and having a busy family life either sucks my life or time. Or both!

As for scoring - creating a game take far more time than creating a poem or taking a picture, but would score the same. That doesn't really work.

Besides, I'll be doing my regular Advent Opening (I've scored another really shit one this year. It just needs to arrive in time) - would I score a point each day for doing pretty much feck all and same as usual?

Dunno.

Yeah, this is why I'm assuming that making it a compo would be a bit of a disaster!!

Out of the regular folk that visit each day, I'm fairly sure that about 1 of us will have the time to do something significant enough to make this a proper compo. .. And we all know which of me that is.

I reckon I'd put up some sort of a challenge

Although those cursed 'other projects' would hamper me somewhat.

I’d love to do Something , but this autumn I’ve had less time for coding since... ever! I’m in Moscow on an exchange, and the Russians are mad. Our schedule is insane, the workload is punishing.
Hopefully I’ll have time to do... something.
