Socoder -> Hardware and Technology -> Router Rebooter

Did the "Turn it off and on again" thing to my network, this morning, then found the general speed to have once again increased to about twice it's speed...

I can understand my PC slowing down without reboots. All those programs loading and closing, and all the bits of memory that gets fragmented and stuff.
A reboot does the PC some good.

But, I do wonder why my router needs that, too..

Very silly.

Just been on online support with BT about my router for the last 40 mins or so - after doing the online diagnosis that reported 'alls fine...' - I knew it wasn't so I opened an online chat.

Suffice to say, we could almost guarantee an intermission during a film due to the broadband banging out - credit to BT, they're sending us out a new router

BT routers (at least) do automatic firmware updates - usually at night, so they can often reboot themselves and have to reconnect. Also, no reason at all why the firmware should be bug-free - routers can crap out too, just like PCs, or Sky boxes, or anything.

We once had an underground line fault which took three BT engineer visits to find. They then tried charging me £90+VAT a go for the first two. I wrote letters.

Ahh letters, the pen is (sometimes) mightier than the sword. Although, as I get older I can see how a sword would be more appropriate in some cases

My router went belly up just recently. Tried an online test thing on the bt website, couldn't finish it because part of the sets seemed to disconnect my internet. Anyway after two attempts at online chat to test the line and internet connection, they decided that my router was the problem and sent a new one out (the old one was only two years old). So far so good.

I only reboot my Router when I notice severe freezups, although I have been told by many that I should reboot it at least once a week.

Must be something to do with the date...

The problem with the Virgin Superhub 2, it takes fucking ages to reboot.

Thing with my router - BT Home Hub 5, is that certain things (phone, sky box, laptop) disconnect randomly from the router if I have the 5GHz band enabled.

Which is a bit of a bastard as I bought an 802.11ac wifi adapter for my PC so I could pull stuff from my NAS quicker. But the disconnections were such a pain in the arse I went back to 802.11n.

And it isn't just BT routers - I tried replacing it with a D-Link 802.11ac router, and that was the bloody same!

Are you sure that's not the wifi adapter? If you're experiencing the same issue with two different routers, then .....?

No, because that was the only thing that was using 802.11ac protocol on 5GHz, and even the 2.4GHz connections were dropping out randomly.

I just stuck with 2.4GHz and 802.11n as I couldn't be arsed trying to get to the bottom of it any more. This was maybe a year or so ago so maybe the tech has improved by now. I should probably switch the 5GHz channel back on and see...

I'm still on N. My backups run nice and fast, enough that I don't yet have need for anything more than that..

The original V1 Virgin Superhubs (such as what's in the house I currently live in) have a known issue where they don't have enough memory (or there's a memory leak, or something of that ilk), which causes them to gradually slow down over time. Until you reboot it and the memory is cleared out. Apparently it gets worse as the hardware gets older, too.

Don't know if that's the hub you have or not, of course, but figured I'd mention it just in case.

Yeah,that's the bugger.
I've now got a reminder on my phone to reboot the thing every 3 days.
Haven't had any further issues since starting that routine.

Hi guys,

This story caught my eye from the news letter.

I've worked at Zen Internet for nearly 10 years now, 4 years in Tech support and the rest as a Network Engineer in the core network team.

If you have ADSL, rebooting your router causes the exchange to lose sync and if you do it often, like regularly, the exchange will think there is a fault and gradually reduce the sync speed of your line.

TL;DR? rebooting your router a lot makes it slower.

FTTC/BT Infinity/Fibre broadband etc is VDSL2, the copper bit from your house to the green cab is using similar tech to ADSL but I believe it doesn't follow the same speed reducing technique.

Not that experienced with Virgin, well as a home supplier anyway.

802.11ac, 5GHz WiFi is great over short, open air distances and rubbish for passing through walls, higher frequencies are more susceptible to interference.

Feel free to ask any questions, discounted connections you ask? I think I can get a friends and family deal but not sure on the discount or other limits.

OT: I used to be with Zen Internet many years ago, early 2000s. Always had great service and only left because others were starting to have much lower prices.

What you said about reducing the connection speed rings true tho. Had a ton of router issues with BT a while back, which in the end wouldn't connect at more than 2Mbps. Customer services were useless - had me testing master socket etc etc. Went on forums in the end and a BT forum admin said he'd reset my profile. Didn't have much hope but sure enough, full service restored a few hours later.

Its a common issue, not done broadband support in 5.5 years now so I could be a bit rusty.

Well, my first foray into web land was with BT in 01 ish, I swore I wouldn't go back. NO new router yet, but our ADSL has seemed a little less wobbly.

Me either, or the 2-hour cutoffs that meant you couldn't download anything bigger than about 20Mb.
