Stupidest plan ever! (OUYA not Steve).
Why the hell would you announce the next iteration of a system when you can't even sell the one you have? They've only just now struck a marketing deal with some big American store or other, so they'll have them in real shops by xmas, but to say from the start that the new one will be out in a year is absolute brain dead stupidity. Why would anyone on the planet buy the current version? Come to think of it, why would anyone buy the next one if their plan is to release a new one every year. They're going to end up in the same pickle as android phones, where you have to accommodate many different models, screen sizes, RAM, storage space etc. in the same game. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

I can't see me upgrading my OUYA in the near future, I'm one of the (probably many) customers of the "Why the hell should I buy a new one? I only just bought the previous version!" mentality. So just by announcing this, they've already lost many potential sales. Idiots.

On the controller front though, they have modified the controller a couple of times from the original based on user feedback, they just didn't mention it.

I'm going to wait to see what turns up.
There's one basic issue which might crop up, as far as I'm concerned, and that is the basic "previous screen feedback" thing.
It's baffling how so many Android devices can fuck such a simple thing up, but.. inexplicably.. they can!
OUYA isn't currently fucking it up, but if they switch gfx chips, any future OUYA might break it.

Other than that, given the amount of Monkey Testing I've done over the past year, I'm pretty sure that what I code for OUYA1 should happily run on OUYA79.
Or at least, logically it should, anyway!
If anything it's a case of more-power each year, and given it's cheap £100 pricetag, I can't imagine that putting folk off, any more than the exact same mentality stopping people from buying a new mobile each year. (LOL @ My sister who bought her very first iPhone, the 5, because "it was cheap!" at the end of August, just a couple of weeks before the iPhone5s turned up!)

I think the pricepoint is disposable "enough" that it's a feasible method.. So long as they ensure they don't break things along the way, I'm fine with it.

It's getting the word out in the first place, that's proving more of a problem.

I bought my 3rd(?) gen iPod one day before the new one was about to be released, without knowing. Gutted? Youbetcha!

As for a new OUYA yearly, at £100 it's pretty much a cert I'd upgrade, especially if I can sell a few games each year.

I do wonder why they are not preaching to the unkowing or unconverted - there's been no physical advertising at all as far as I can see. Only internet nerds know anything about the machine.

i actually quite like the OUYA. Yeah, it's pretty rough around the edges, but it's better than I was expecting.
