Either use a pointer or don't do this. There's no point in having a byref member in something that doesn't have full-fledged constructors.

I'm sure there are other ways to achieve the same end result.
Usually help to strip everything down.
Sometimes I find that simply cutting everything down, can help me think it through.

Try posting a tiny working/broken version of your issue, and if you don't come up with something, I'm sure someone else here, can. ... Maybe!
