I don't mind windows 8, once you click 'desktop' to get past the awful metro interface its good.

First thing I did was compare it to Windows performance in Battlefield 3, it was a couple of fps quicker on average.

I hope they make it so you can boot to desktop again like in the beta.

I seem to be one of the very few that actually likes Windows 8, desktop and phone.

I spend most of the time in the desktop area when using it, but i don't find the new start menu (aka Metro) that bad, and for me personally, i find the presentation a lot better then windows of old, heck, i don't even need to install that third party "start" button because i just tap the windows key on my keyboard, which, ive done countless times before!

I also love the interface on my Nokia 920... In fact, i adore this phone... Its one of the very few phones that have managed not to get scratched within the first fortnight of use... I work on a building site, so, any phone i have, regardless of a cover, gets hammered... This one is still brand new!

Given all that, i can understand the new OS not being everyones cup of tea, there's a lot of changes afoot (and i will admit visual studio 2012 looks bloody awful, but, its just as usable as previous versions, and in most cases, you spend most of the time looking at the source code editor control)

In most cases, i think if you stick with it, it will grow on you, and if not, well, there's always Windows 7 which is what the majority of people prefer, so, if your looking to upgrade from XP (which you really should, there's just over a year of support left), then go there instead... Me though, ill be using Windows 8 over the rest of them, because, well... I like it!

Not sure what model my mum's laptop is but I can tell you it's made by Samsung and is a pussy-pink glittery colour.

It came with a Norton trial installed that slowing it right down, I soon removed that load of crap, then installed Avast. It runs quicker now but I swear blind that my Pentium-4 is running craploads quicker than her shiny new laptop.

yeah, there is a button on metro called "desktop"

But on the pre-release you could set an option to straight to desktop on boot, they removed it in the official release

Just clicking the Windows button takes you to and from Desktop too (well it does on my son's Win8 lappy).
