Blitzcoder! Anyone else think it’s crazy that this community has existed so long? Have we reached a decade yet? Must be close, at least.

I'm amazed I'm still programming!

I wasn't there at the beginning, but I was there for a couple of years before the end. Then had to make the jump to the official Blitz forums. Shudder.

Thankyou, Mark Sibly
For bringing us Blitz,
Where all of my coding,
Still looks like it fits.

And thankyou to Krylar
For all that he's done,
In making BlitzCoder
With all of its fun.

Funnily enough, i wasn't there at the end, it was a great place for someone just getting out in Blitz, i think after Krylar handed over the reins, it sorta lost a bit of its soul!

But, i still have very fond memories of it, and for some odd reason the first thing that i can remember from back in the day was a little CPC emulator thing Jay wrote and posted!

Oddly, my strongest memory is Spinal's Bill and Ted sig!! Not sure why that is!!
BlitzCoder was my first experience of an Internet forum. Is it obvious that that's stuck with me, through the years!?

I found SoCoder on the offchance somehow when CodersWorkshop got killed off. It's gotta be about 8 years by now.

SoCoder was hurriedly scrambled together when CW was unceremoniously closed. Not that you can tell. There are no bugs at all!!!!

Hah, those few weeks trying to get things together and find each other after CW closed were so exciting.

Can you believe that's already 6.5 years ago?!?? Yikes!!

I was in high school then. ...and was still coding on the regular. And JL235 was still DiablosDevil, and Socoder still had a .co.nr domain name, and DevCrunch was the enemy, and Cobra was something to look forward to.

They were ever "The Enemy".. They were "The Backup", who then also unceremoniously closed, thus further fragmenting our already broken up community!!

Someone in the link below don't like Idigicon.

From within the linked page Shockwave:
I am almost certainly going to code an idigicon fucktro.

.. I'd completely forgotten about Cobra. Erk!
Just been over to the site, and.. Um.. It's a bit quiet, over there. And I thought Socoder was on the unlively side!! Yikes!!

DevCrunch sure has a fun message on its front page, too..

Thank god I started doing these newsletters!! At least, when nothing else is happening, the front page looks vaguely active!!

I actually bought Cobra. Coded one game in it and realised it wasn't the be-all-and-end-all product it was marketed to be. Awful syntax and while it was on par with PlayBASIC it was MUCH slower than BMax.

And the forum was crap.

Blimey!, forget dead as a DoDo, that Devcrunch site is more dead than the first animals to go extinct.

I remember CodersWorkshop having one thing in abundance, trolls. I lost count how many times I saw trolling and the first thing I got when I joined on there was a bollocking from one of the mods for the size of my avatar, it felt like I had been put on trial for murder or something.

blanko1324
Yeah, there were some trolls. Remember the "Hoe you maek game?" thread? Whoever it was kept that going for days; it was hilarious.

@blanko I had forgotten the co.nr days. I certainly recall the excitement when we stepped up to a .net.

Reminder : We also have a .com, but that doesn't sound as good, and I'm not entirely sure if anyone actually uses it!

I sure do miss the good old days. Even looking back on old posts, here, there's a whole bunch of old members who have slipped away into the ether.

Perhaps we should have a big event, or something.. see if we can coax folk back again?
Any suggestions?

A Wednesday Workshop, perhaps (j/k, nobody likes those anymore!)

I was using the .com for awhile. I only stopped when the mudchat mysteriously broke. Now it still breaks sometimes, but I just switch to the .com temporarily.

I once had a tour round Idigicon's offices in Doncaster, I think it was my efforts in a christmas game competition back in 2001/2. Can only remember one of the guys names who attend with me, was a couple, cyberseth, no idea what happened to him and the rest, there was a scottish guy but cant remember his name either.

I too had no responsibilities other than my day job as I still lived with my mum and dad, lots of coding was done with little else.

Sadly this is not true anymore.

Good times, good times

PS: I too own Cobra and found it OK but little documentation and a slow forum
