Socoder -> Books -> Ingenium's Latin Challenge - #001

Tue, 16 Jan 2007, 10:39
ingenium1
Sooo...
this is a new type of competition... but it isn't about computers ecc... but it is about the latin language... each week i am going to post one latin sentence and you have to find out who wrote it and what it means...
...
i can image the face of Jayenkay...
...
the sentence of this week is:
At tuba terribili sonitu 'taratantara' dixit.
...

...
Oh and YOU MUST NOT USE INTERNET!
...

Roger Federer is go(o)d.
But he is not alone.

Just relax... sometimes there's no need to argue.

How are we meant to find out what it means, if we cannot use the internet? To be fair I have a giant university library nearby and I'm getting quite pally with a Greek girl with an American accent, who just happens to know Latin. But not everyone has these resources.

But he is not alone.

rats,

that I can't use the Googling internet. um, can I ask my mom?

she is well versed in Latin. I guess that would be cheating.
But for all my Latin concerns and questions....Mother knows best.

cheers,

Jay's guess, based on "Words that sound a bit like other words"

At - That
Tuba - Tuba/Trumpet
terribili - Terrible
sonitu - Sonnet/Song
taratantara - Taratantara
dixit - Init..

That Trumpet Song is terrible.. Taratantara.. Init..

Methinks it might be something to do with Scrappy-doo.

I'm confused. What are you all talking about?
Tue, 24 Apr 2007, 11:41
power mousey
yeah, but its random this time.

True!!

Jay and others,

when we were kids we joked and started this language
called 'ung lung'.

every consonant you add a 'ung' and just say the vowels
of a,e,i,o,u, and y.

we added the lung part cause its a mouthful
to say.
so, I signed my cheers signature in ung lung.
Do you all understand!?

I lung i kung i e tung!

a nung dung i tung wung a sung nung tung
pung i gung lung a tung i nung. hung a hung a a

new edit: translation-->

I liket! (for quickie saying of 'I like it!')

and it wasn't pig latin. hahaa

I would just like to note that I am disappointed that not one of you used the phrase 'crazy moon language' in this thread.

Anyway, powermousey's post reminds me of my interest in conlang, so here are two useful phrases in eelhoverese:

Gitanistama covran de ranem. =>
"I-have-hit the face to-myself."
"I have hit myself in the face."

Kenetta noft kanane de opuhhan banas ernimetta maheik ersnut's sto, ergt sis.
"Came again man the books my took to-town I-reside reason, I-am angry."
"I'm angry because the man that took my books came to the town that I live in again."

('A' as in 'father', 'hh' as German 'ch', say ei like the Fonz, 'c' is 'sh.' Otherwise pronunciation is surprisingly straightforward.)

In summary, I need a life. :[

ei!! thanks you.

and don't forget Klaatu barada nikto
and even Shazbot.
