Linkage -- One VERY GOOD reason why medical care should be paid for with taxes and free to use by anyone who requires it.

Unfortunately lots of people manipulate the system like this, and tbh I can't blame them. It happens in this country too - look at Ronnie Biggs (train robber (I won't use the term Great)). He only came back to Britain for free medical care on the NHS. They should have let him die in jail.

The NHS is used by millions every year, only a small minority abuse the system. I also wouldn't want to live in a country where we pick and chose who is worthy of being treated.

Thank god for the NHS!

I know about the NHS - I work for it.

You'd be shocked at how many people abuse the NHS (I'm not even going to mention the welfare system (oops!)) - we're not just talking hundreds, but many thousands of foreign visitors that get their bills written off as they can't be chased when they return home. This does not include time-wasters or repeat admissions. Yes this is only a small minority, but it is also a sizable amount of money that is lost as a result.

The country would be in a much worse state if it didn't have the NHS. It is a credit to this nation.

I totally agree that a pick and choose health system isn't a system that I want to be involved in - either as a patient or a member of staff. It can't possibly feel good sending a patient elsewhere purely because they/their insurance can't/won't pay the bill at the end of treatment, or being the patient being turned away from the best/most local care.

There are plenty of countries with shanty towns and slums on the edges of their cities, and one of the (many) reasons we don't have the in the UK is because the government has invested in social housing and benefits.

The same equates to the NHS. It might not be entirely fair for a group (even if sizable) to take advantage of it, but again I'd rather have misuse then shanty towns and slums.

Indeed.

It's impossible to create a system that's not open to abuse somewhere along the line without making it nigh-on impossible for those that really need the services to get them.

This is why I think government assistive programs should be thorough but minimal. Once you start giving out too much, people exploit it.

I kinda waning on this idea; it gets back to my example of there being no shanty towns in the UK. Simply put that is partly because we built council houses, paid for by the government.

I would write something useful here, but can't be bothered right now.
My grandfather died on Saturday. Maybe I'll comment later.

Edit: Guess that just goes to show how much of an urge I have to express myself about these things... seeing as I had an inexplicable urge to write *something* here...
