Socoder -> Off Topic -> Help : Find a PC

Fucking technology!!!

PC at work's more dead than my home PC!
Time for a new one, except with added complications.
The PC's hooked up to the TV and the tv's done with sVideo.
But for the life of me, I can't find a decent new PC with SVideo.
Everything's sodding HDMI, and that means a new tv, and a total rewire, which was a fucking pain in the ass to do in the first place...

So, PC, cheap, specs don't really matter, but SVideo is important..

SVideo is hard to find in PCs these days, it's true. I have a hookup somewhere that is really fail- it converts VGA to RCA to SVideo, but it works. Worth a shot if you can't find anything else.

HDReady TV - 89,99GBP

Dell-Optiplex PC - 139GBP

Just add a graphicscard with an HDMI port and you're good to go!!

Could you take the graphics card from the current PC? Then you can just buy a low-end machine.

You could also look into getting some converters, from HDMI/DVI/AGP to sVideo. Some must exist.

You could also checkout eBuyer, Cash Converters or Computer Exchange for an old graphics card with sVideo included.

Yeah, looking like 2nd hand's the bet bet here.
Every PC I can think of have AGP gfx, except the current halfdead one at home. A new system would obviously use PCIe, but even the halfdead one at home is using onboard! Gah! That's what I get for not caring about gfx!!!

We're now contemplating buying a new system to replace his main PC, and using his old one at work.

It's still the same issue, still needs to be hooked up, there, too, but at least it can be dealt with at a less urgent rate!
(He spends most of his time in the shop, so that's the important bit!!)

Btw Jay, are you in a Union?
You shouldn't really concern yourself with this. Not unless you get paid for overtime, and possibly hazard pay (considering you're not technically a qualified IT technician).

What a lazy-unionist thing to say. You shouldn't avoid work, you should embrace it!

@Afr0

Qualified or not, if Jay can do the job in hand, that's all that matters.

No its not! This isn't a slight on Jay at all, more a slight on his boss. If you can't afford to hire qualified people to do a job, at least give your employees hazard pay! Or extra insurance. Or something.
And since the PC at work is dead, it probably means that Jay puts in extra hours at home looking for a PC on the internet. In which case he's entitled to overtime pay.

Come to thing about it, now that I stand corrected... Jay!, ask for a pay rise.

His boss probably didn't tell him to do this and so Jay isn't entitled anything.

And I'm sure his boss doesn't care if he doesn't have working equipment to be able to do his job - none of my bosses ever have.

The "PC" at work isn't the till.. It's the PC that both me and him piss about with, while we're both stuck at work, bored out of our minds.
There's games to play, browsers to browse, and the TV connection to watch proper shows instead of the buckets of crap that the TV networks decide to show.

Sounds like your boss is a cool guy, it's very rare for any boss to give their staff those kind of perks.

It means there's probably few people coming through the shop.

Anyways, if you're not Unionized, I would advice you to find a Union and join it Jay! It can really help you out if you get in trouble at your workplace.
Also in Norway you'll get insurance for your property (pretty much everything you own except your house and car) included in the membership fee! You should check out if they have something similar in the UK.
This goes to anyone else who's not in a Union as well!
If you're not in a Union you probably don't have the right to strike to get a higher salary, either.

|edit| This is a bit off-topic, but to anyone living in Europe, please do yourself and Ryanair's employees a favour and boycott it! They have a baggage weightlimit, you have to buy all meals and drinks (even on long flights), and Michael O'Leary has a policy not to cooperate with any union. Michael O'Leary is a complete twat. All pilots in Ryanair have to pay Ryanair for their education (every company has a certain amount of education that's specific to their company), and they have no guarantee that they're hired once they're done. The in-cabin personell also have to pay for their own living-expenses when they have to sleep over, and the use of short-term contracts is too high! |edit|

He works in a newsagents, so there really isn't any justification in being in a union.

Re Ryan-Air: although I don't fully agree with all their companies policies the way that they have stripped down their flights (you have to pay for anything and everything) is what allows them to be the cheapest airline.

I'd be happy not receiving food or drink on a short haul fight if it means I can save off my ticket; the same also goes with only using hand luggage.

This also means that if you don't agree then you can pay for it with a more expensive company. You have the freedom to choose!

Quite frankly I don't care so much about their service as I care about their handling of their staff.
Short-term contracts = more stressed out personell = less safety.
This goes back to the consumer through the employees.
