I haven't made a topic here in ages, but whatever.
I suspect I have a mild case of Insomnia, so aside from the obvious (I probably won't be able to get new sleeping pills until after the weekend)... what are your best tips for sleeping?
Whether or not you think I have Insomnia is irrelevant. Suffice it to say I have trouble sleeping. So I need tips. For sleeping.

Cut back on the soda. It's amazing how potent that stuff is.

Hm. Difficult that!
But yeah... uhm... I should probably switch to juice or water instead.
However tomorrow I'm thinking of just tossing in cans and cans of Battery and Redbull so that I'll force myself to not sleep during the day. That way I'll actually be tired at night. I just have to make sure I don't drink too much, because then I won't be tired!

Try not drinking any caffeine, you'd be surprised how tired you are.

Keep a good rotation of hours. Sleeping for too long can keep you up for longer. Sleeping at different hours on different days also tends to lead you either sleeping too little or too much, both being bad.

I'd also advise running (or any other exhaustive exercise) during the day. But don't do it within 6 hours of when your going to bed. Exercise makes you far more alert, especially later when you have recovered, and this makes it harder for you to sleep. But after that period your body is then more eager to sleep simply because it's used up so much energy over the day.

I also find it's much easier for me to sleep if I've had a long active day (and I mean just doing lots of stuff not doing exercise) then a short lazy one. But if you do have a very active day then you should put time aside in the evening to turn off whatever you have been working on so you can relax and calm down before going to bed.

Finally, it's easier said then done, but don't think to yourself whilst your trying to get to sleep! Try to move over to other mental pictures that don't involve conversation, as thinking tends to keep many people lying in bed awake for hours (me included).

Stealth: Exactly. That's why I was thinking of using it to control my sleeping pattern...

JL235: I think my main problem is that I have a bad rotation of hours. So I've got to work on that one.
I also tend to think alot when in bed. :\ I... hmm... yeah, I should try something else

I generally just try to cut off my thinking, because I realize I'll be able to do all the thinking I want tomorrow; and that I kind of need to get some sleep.

I also listen to Canon in D a bunch of times over and follow along with the music until Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Don't use your computer or watch television after 18:00. Bit boring, but it works well enough.

My sleeping pattern is currently out of whack; sleeping during the day and staying awake during the night. But even if your sleeping odd hours it's good to ensure you always sleep for 8 to 9 hours at a time.

I'm personally solving this by staying awake for 18 hours and then sleeping for 9. This is a total of 27 hours, so each day I'm shifting my bed time 3 hours along. Tomorrow I should be waking up at 4am, and then 7am on the day after. This way I only have to stay awake for marginally longer each day and my body isn't having to adjust to a sudden change in bed time.

Some people have an irregular sleep pattern (like JL235 described). This is just the way their body's internal clock works.

Yeah, my sleeping pattern is out of whack too. So much so, in fact, that yesterday I felt totally fine after only about 4 - 5 hours of sleep and half a can of Redbull. However I decided to not drink Soda after 6PM, which seems to have helped make me tired.
I also took some allergy medicines after advice from my dad. They also make you tired.
So this night I slept from around 11PM till 8AM.
My biggest problem is avoiding sleeping during the day, and caffeine actually helps solve that problem. Not drinking anything containing caffeine after 6PM seems to be a good limit for me.

Edit: Oh yeah, and not watching anything before sleeping doesn't work for me! I'm so used to watching a film or an episode of something in bed before I sleep that not doing it makes me nervous and makes me start to fret on having to try to get to sleep.
