Socoder -> On Topic -> best server OS

I am planning to look into running a small server at home, mainly for Subversion, some network folders and maybe to also double as a networked media player. I have some free licenses for Windows Server 2003 and 2008 which was my original thought to run; but today wondered about sticking on OpenSolaris or Ubuntu Server edition instead.

What would others suggest? If you've done similar, what did you use and what was your experience?

FreeBSD, just based on what most folks I know who do run servers say, it's supposed to be more secure, easier to set up, etc.

freebsd is also what I hear most also with the reason security. I always prefer debian myself just because I'm used to it.

Pick a linux distribution suited to your tastes and knowledge. It's not a big deal which one you go with, they all do the same job at the end of the day.

I use Ubuntu Server. It runs subversion pretty well and is updated regularly (major upgrades twice a year). Plus, theres lot of documentation if you get stuck (which is very helpful).

I would go with FreeBSD. It is the most secure OS on the planet.
