Not sure whether to leave them there or not. Currently, if you're unregistered, the ads are still there.

Thoughts?

No idea myself. I would say if they work and people click on them, then use them, if not, don't.

If people use them and it makes a bit of money, might as well keep them. It doesn't cost anything to register, so those who come back to SoCoder often can easily get rid of them. The only slight concern may be that they might give new users a lower first impression of the site.

Spam is Spam, especially when it gets reposted to 4 different sections of the site, all at the same time.
I'm testing out the adverts, this week.

So far, the past 3 days have brought us 50p of income. (wowie) Not a whole lot, but if that carries on through the week, and is a regular amount, then it could help us move upwards, server-wise.

£1 a week = £52 a year = more or less what I currently pay for the hosting. If I bundle that with my amount, then we've got enough for twice the server.

I think server > ad removal, plus being able to register to remove the ads, might make more folk inclined to bother to register.
I'm pretty sure there's a whole lot of people who visit, but never register, given the 300-a-day unique visitors we're getting.

But like I said, it's only a trial period.

If it doesn't do much, then at the end of the day it's not worth the hassle. We'll see how this week continues.

I think the mid-thread ads are a little bit bothersome, but if they're only for non-logged in users, I can't really see complaining. I would not mind seeing the side ads even while logged in -- Google ads are plenty unobtrusive.

I don't see any problem with ads on the site. If it's going to help pay for the hosting, then that's a good thing.

Even if the ads were visible to members then I still wouldn't complain. I sure would do some clicking now and then if it helps

Adverts are OK, but they get kinda annoying when they break forums in half.
