Socoder -> Off Topic

Quoted from Erbbysam (since nobody seems to have noticed it/replied, I'm shifting it over to it's own little topic.)

Also, a little OT, figured I would point out something very, very interesting:
"blitzcoder.com expired on 07/19/2009 and is pending renewal or deletion. "
I really do miss that site and hope that it will come back soon, if no one else picks it up, I may and forward it here or something. Has there been any discussion on this?

I'm in two minds over this thing.
On the one hand, sure, that'd be nice!!
But that'd be it. A URL to soak up the aftermath.

I'd much rather see someone else get the URL and actually DO something with it. Wouldn't it be nice to see a nice new refreshed clean super amazing BlitzCoder site?
Sure, they'd probably overdo it, and borke the whole theory of the site but we've still got Socoder for the luvly BC-ness. Meanwhile we'd get to see a fantastic new site emerge, and take things back to how they oughta be, as long as they don't screw it up!

Meanwhile, last I checked the value was about £1,000+ and there's not a cat in hell's chance I'm paying that just for a URL. That'd be money better spent on a super-server, never mind just pissing about with a link!

I was going to comment on ErbbySam's post, but it never happened!!

Anyways, I'd love to have the URL. I wouldn't be in the position to pay 1000£ for it right now, but I'd certainly take good care of it. I've always wanted my own programming forum, and I know how to set up and administer a phpBB board.
I could probably also knock up a semi-decent logo in Photoshop!
I don't have any dedicated hosting available right now except for Afr0Games, but I'd easily be able to buy another server from GoDaddy.

That said, I'm not sure it'd be entirely 'fair' that anyone from this community gets the link, as the community (not neccessarily the site itself) would probably just end up being mostly Socoder 2.0!

Edit: I always wanted a forum with a bit more emphasis on artwork showcases. But it would certainly encompass programming as well. Just throw some more artwork related stuff into the mix!

"as long as they don't screw it up!"

Putting a shite phpbb on there, and leaving it to rot is not an option.

SoCoder is the new BlitzCoder. Therefore, you should take it. Perhaps you could build a Blitz specific front page to go under that link, on the edge of SoCoder.

I have no intention of leaving it to rot, thankyou very much!

I personally would like to see a blitzcoder site benefit socoder in as many ways as possible. But 1000 still seems like a lot to spend on a domain name.

I went to godaddy and it still says its taken, the whois says it's owned by "pending renewal or deletion". I have a theory that the price will drop as soon as it goes out completely. That being said, I think that it would be perfectly acceptable for socoder to use it as a (separate) domain. As JL said, it might be a good idea to add a different front end for those using that domain name, at least for non-registered users. It couldn't hurt, anyway.

I also think it could be built as a front end to SoCoders showcase section. No forum, no bars down the sides, none of that stuff. Just dedicated to showcases on the front page and throughout.

For the extras it could link to SoCoder (i.e. in the menu bar) and be billed as SoCoders sister showcase site. SoCoder itself would remain unchanged.

I see few potential reasons why one would want the blitzcoder.com domain now: nostalgia, and catching the members who inexplicably missed BC's death more than five years back.

Neither are very good reasons, to me. Those who haven't been around for five years, if anyone, won't be coming back. The other ones know about SoCoder, and have decided that it's not the place for them. Buying the domain will do us no good; I know that I'd continue to use the socoder.com URL. Besides, this isn't Blitzcoder, which by the way is a very misfitting name since many of us don't use Blitz that often anymore.

That said, I wouldn't have anything against another small coding site, but then it couldn't just be the SoCoder members under a different roof. Keep in mind that we're having troubles finding new members here! Preferably a site would not be started by a member from over here, since that would only attract members from this place, basically leaving us with two mirror sites. Also, a part which I like about SoCoder is that everything is so integrated. So to me could also not be a shite phpBB board, which would be more like SoCoder -2.0.
