Socoder -> Question of the Day -> QOTD : Sony's Plan

Sony have recently come out and suggested that "Home" is a Long Term Plan. A bit like they keep saying for the entire PS3 thing.
Personally, I feel that might very well be sitting in their offices with their fingers in their ears, hoping everything will be magically fine at a later date.

QOTD : Do you think they'll pull it off?

Assuming Blu-Ray becomes the major market rather than the niche it is now, Sony may eventually do decently with the PS3.

I have my doubts about Blu-Ray ever overthrowing DVD, though. I think there will be a new technology that is actually attractive to the lay person before that ever happens.

As far as their plan goes, they've been beating their chests with their heads in the sand for years now.

Well I think BD WILL be the next DVD... Just give it time for HD TVs to go 'more' mainstream (i.e. get cheaper), and BD prices to fall.

HD TV's have been around for 13 years now. I think if they were going to go mainstream it would have happened.

No, because they have been, and many still think are, far too expensive.

This is the main issue though. As Blu-ray and HiDef are finally starting to hit, we're already hearing about Super-Quad HD, and 3D TV.
And given that 95% of our stuff is now being piped through our super-fast broadband, (Virgin's VOD being a super demonstration of this) are we ever going to get to the Mainstream Blu-ray+HD era?
I mean, DVD happened because we'd been waiting so very long for it!
VHS sucked, and DVD's looked fantastic.
Add on extras, and folk came in their droves..

That's not happened with BR yet, because..
Well.. I don't know about you guys, but I'm perfectly happy with DVD!

Well when TVs are 1080p minimum, and the AV nuts have their 'super quad HD' (or whatever the next step up in resolution will be called), your good looking DVDs will show their age.

But currently, yes, DVDs are more than adequate for a huge proportion of the population who either like the fact they can pick up a DVD player and a couple of DVDs for the price of a single BD disc, don't care to see the skin cells falling off their favourite actors, or have a TV which couldn't show the skin cells anyway.

BD already has a firm grip on the AV nuts (I also frequent the What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision forums), so when they have moved into 4D, Joe Public will have access to all the HD/BD gubbins as if it were a 12" CRT with a in built VHS player.

Currently it's HD replacing standard definition. Before then it was flat screen replacing CRT. Before that it was widescreen replacing the 4:3 ration. This is how technology progresses! It comes out, is way too expensive, and so takes 10 years to come down in price. Each generation slowly replaces the last.

Over the rest of the year (and next year) the PS3 will drop in price. Maybe a little, maybe a lot, but it will come down. More games will also be released. As a result sales in the PS3 will increase, it will become a success. Maybe not PS2 big, probably more N64 big. But with the Wii loosing momentum the PS3 can catch up.

Blue-ray was also far better for the PS3 then I had first predicted, do not underestimate it. It will replace DVD and the PS3 is one of the best prices Blue-Ray players on the market. However I still think the majority of people see the PS3 as a console, not a media-player.

I've had the same TV for ten years. Who cares about hi-def?

I've had the same TV for nineteen years, don't care about HD, and use my computer monitor for nearly all viewing anyhow. I'm not even going to bother to buy a digital converter box. Broadcast TV is dead, I'd much rather watch the few shows I do like on DVD when they become available.

I may eventually buy a new TV, though, because I've been wanting one with a theater aspect ratio since before HD arrived. But I certainly won't be 'upgrading' my DVD collecton to Blu-Ray at any point now or in the future.

The general public sees the PS3 as an expensive games machine, gamers see it as a Blu-Ray player. It may eventually sell enough to become profitable, but it'll never be big, and it'll never rebuild the huge bank account established by the PS2 then squandered on the PS3's development.

I think Sony's plan is actually to sell the PS3 as a super-computing platform, what with all those Cell vector processors.

Concerning HD: Do we really need another slew of the same movies we've bought on VHS, then DVD, now Blu-Ray? How much more do we need to see? I will half-quote some ZP here and say very tongue in cheek 'I thought <insert tired movie here> was a pinnacle achievement, but would be much better if it were just a little more clearer and wider'
