hey hobo,

my brother has DSL. And its really fast!
So, when I use his computer I bring over some
cd read and write disks and its downloads galore
at such places as YouTube, Tucows, Turbosquid,
and a few other sites as well.
I practically up all night...just downloading videos
over at YouTube.
a 300mb download on my computer and with AOL took well
over almost 2 days and I was using a download manager with resume capability. On my brothers DSL it took only 10
minutes.

I saw the chart of the average megabits per second broken down for each country. I expected Japan to number 1.
Yet, I didn't expect Greece to be last and the lowest. Yet,
see that tiny pixel near the bottom and at the end...
well, thats for: San Jose, USA, power mousey hole. I have the slowest connection of all. That even a chicken will safely cross the road a hundred times before I ever get connected.
My abysmal AOL.
Yet, I have a book or two at my side to read when its trying to connect or even accessing a site. So, I get some good reading in too.

cheers,

I've got Virgin media Cable Broadband, at a cost of £25.00 p/month. Since Virgin took over, it seems quite slow lately. The thing is... When NTL were running the system, it was £24.99 p/month and getting 4MB D/L speeds. But when Virgin took over it slowed down somewhat, and they had the cheek of rounding the price up to £25.00. I not moaning personally over the difference of a penny, but just imagine how much more that extra penny has increased their turnover when you consider how many customers there are.

Wow - 300mb in 10mins!!
That's fast for even broadband!

I'm on the £25 4Mb/s NTL->Virgin broadband, too. I haven't noticed any drop in speed, though.
If you really want to check the speed of your connection, load up XNews, and watch the speed that newsgroups go.
news.cable.ntlworld.com
That's been a pretty constant speed for me.

Shame about the upload speed being so slow, really, but.. The fact that it seems to be pretty much constant connection (ie, very few disconnections.. maybe once a year, if that) more than makes up for it.

As far as the 60Mb/s goes. I really can't imagine using it!
Heck, Virgin offer a "Now hitting 20Mb/s!!" service, and I haven't switched to that. 4's good enough for me!

oh yeah, skypenguin.

when I come over to spend time with my brother
he assumes and expects me to spend some time on his computer. If I don't...he thinks something is wrong.
He is the one who introduced me to YouTube videos and a few other sites too.

My whole family has offered me a one or 2 year plan for DSL internet connection for Christmas. But that would be my most and major Christmas present.

cheers

I've noticed that a lot of websites don't even let you download at the full speed you can manage (though with my current host, I've been going at my maximum speed of 250kb/sec to download backups)

If I had 60Mb/s download speed, perhaps there'd be no difference because most websites won't be fast enough to serve at that speed.

Also, my computer just about copes at 250kb/sec - if it had any more data hurtling down the line, I wonder if the processor could handle it anyway?

I still feel jealous, because they'd likely have good upload speeds in Japan too. It might be because I'm uploading over wireless, but I'm with Ntl/Virgin like Jay, and I get a maximum upload speed of 20-5kb/sec when the router is really in a good mood, but usually more like 5-8kb/sec. How does that compare to other ISPs? Maybe I should plug my laptop into a cable just to test.

Hey, hang on. Maybe the internet speeds in the US aren't that different from in Japan - but the apparently smaller value is caused by Power Mousey bringing down the average with his snail-AOL?

You have to bear in mind that in Korea (and I presume it's similar in Japan too) the vast majority of people live in a few large cities. This means a small network will connect almost the entire population, and so is very cheap. Compare this to America which is a far larger country with people spread out, so connecting people is far more expensive.

The Korean government also invested lots of money in it's technology companies, especially robotics, which is also why they are more advanced.

ahhhhhhhh Hobo

at least my snail-AOL didn't bring
the whole Internet down to a stand still.
Like that one guy in that video.

He he - I wonder how long it would take to watch a 20 minute youtube video on dial-up

AOL said they would give us a free speed upgrade to 2mbps by april, but that just has happened, and it's September.

Probably about 20 hours .

The rate youtube is slowing down, it'd probably take 20 hours to watch a 20 second youtube clip.

hey skypenguin,

I tell you it takes a long time to load up.
Just imagine if I want to download it from keepvid site.
Lets find out....

okay...I have a video thats 24 seconds. I went to keepvid and pasted the link to download. The size is 920 KB.
So, depending upon the transfer rate and other factors
I downloaded the video and it took less or under 5 minutes.
After I renamed the video to some other name and with the extension of .flv I can now play and watch it in the FLV
player.
But, if I just let it load and watched it on YouTube
spinal is right. They load very slow and especially with
snail-AOL too.

This clip of 24 seconds took a few minutes(or more) to load. Imagine what a clip of just 5 or 10 minutes would be like?? Probably take an hour or two at the most.

It's been so long since I've used a dial-up connection, I've forgotten how bad it is. The bit that I do remember is the part when you are logging in. The modem used to sound like a Sinclair ZX Spectrum loading a game casette.

I really don't know how we spent so long on dial up.

Our AOL dialup used to download at around 3.5/4/4.5kbps

Or for short, for every second I download on our 1mbps broadband, it would take 30-40 secs to download on dialup.

We used to pay £17.99/month for AOL dialup!, but then we switched to AOL broadband which is £10/month ($20)

We were paying extra for rubbish

£17.99
Aaah, what a relief it was when we finally got freephone dialup!

.. I remember the days before that, when I got £100+ a month phone bills!
Hurray*17 for broadband!

Wowie..
Japan might not be so far ahead for much longer!

Virgin's trying out 50Mb/s!

Bloody hell!

That's expensive.
But it's 50Mbps!
It's almost fast enough to justify the price
This if nothing else might inspire me to get a job one day.

Still, I don't think my computer could cope with downloading anything that fast anyway though.

But mind you, 1.5Mbps uploads would be nice!

The price should drop eventually. We just have to wait for all the rich buggers to drive the price down.
