When you give a bomb to a dog...

In the last couple of days I've played a bit of Warcraft III on Battle.Net (in other words, online). This is, depending on if you play with jerks or reasonable people, very entertaining. Until you encounter the program Banlist.

Banlist is gaming's equivalent of the Nazis. It allows anyone who plays in a game to, at any time, anywhere, add anyone to a global blacklist. When that person (after having been added to the list) joins a game where one of the other players has the Banlist program running, he will be kicked. No questions asked. Poof. You're gone. And you haven't even done anything.

It was developed by some person who got fed up with people leaving the game mid-ways because of losing but the ban does not have to be justified in any way, so in fact you don't even need to leave a game to be blacklisted permanently. I don't know exactly when I was banned. But it doesn't matter, because I have never - ever - left a game because I was having a rough time.

I'm so fucking angry at this. How can you give someone else the right to decide if I'm allowed to play or not? I paid to have complete access to Battle.Net. I haven't done anything wrong at all, and yet when I want to play my favourite maps I'm kicked.

And that's only one thing I hate about people who play games online. Sometimes, they are complete jackasses. And I'll eat my hat if even one of them has the guts to scream and laugh at people in real life, like they do when they aren't punished. Oh, the wonders of being anonymous on the Internet. There should be a Banlist-banlist which prevents all people who use Banlist from playing.

Definitely players using the Banlist need to be banned themselves. You should file a report with Blizzard. Do you think Blizzard could detect programs like that running?

I don't know. It's unlikely, but now that you mention it, I'll definitely contact them.

Good. I'd be interested to hear what they think of it.

Well Blizzard must be a bunch of dongs, for giving players the power to ban other players in the first place !

Don't you mean the gaming equivalent of the TaliBAN

Well, Blizzard didn't implement this themselves. This is a system created by a gamer as an "addon".

I'd say that Osama ban Laden is behind this.

Does Blizzard actually know about Banlist existence ?.

I can't imagine Blizzard would be too happy about 'vigilante mods' decreasing people's enjoyment of their game...

It may go against your personal rules but maybe you could go about adding everyone using the banlist to the banlist(If thats possible), eventually people will start complaining.

I'm not sure how it works, so it might work. But even if I could, I am unable to host games myself due to some network issues (I've sat for ages trying to get that work, only to give up) so I don't really have any power to kick people. Which also means I'm dependent on other people hosting games

I have the same problem in rts games :/, always having to rely on other people to host games. Lucky for me there's no banlist thing for total annihilation.

Does the banlist work on lan games? I always play using Genarena that essentially makes the game think it's playing a local network game.
