Virgin's 50Mb Broadband!

Yowsers, who'd've thunk it..

Virgin have released FIFTY MEG broadband!

If you're on the top tier, you'll be getting it soon.. if not already!
Linkage

Although, I'm happy on 10Mb..
My upload's more important than download, right now..
They really oughta sort that out!!

Does that mean that us 10Mb customers will be getting what the 20Mb customers are getting now, when they get upgraded to 50Mb ?.

Actually, scratch that last comment. It looks like they will be charging £51 p/m for it.

Why would anyone NEED that much speed? "Wow! you can download a movie in 8 minutes"... encouraging piracy again, tut, tut...

Verizon in the states has FiOS up to ~50mbit with i think a 10mbit upload, insanity! I remember using 8000 baud modems, people are spoiled nowadays...

I'm glad companies are at least trying to make available faster download speeds. It's going to help lead us in to a super high speed world.

I agree that it is useless though. Most web servers cut you off at a couple Mb down. So you'll never experience the full speed unless your downloading from a un-capped server, or bitorrent.

I would say for now they are aiming this toward small businesses and people with a lot of internet users in their home. Pretty much anybody planning to use a router and split up the line even more.

I would certainly hope its for small business and multi-PC homes. Otherwise all that effort to push bandwidth to that point is pointless.

It's pointless now. But as connection speeds increase, web developers will design sites to use more bandwidth and make things more visually appealing.

YouTube would become HD. Multi player games would be more advanced. You would be able to buy HD movies online and have them download at a reasonable speed. All kinds of stuff could be possible, we just have to evolve the internet. And I applaud Virgin for doing that.

You have to remember that Virgin are also a giant Media company. They're really pushing what that little box in my living room's capable of.

Already, I can pick and choose from hundreds of TV shows. Missed what was on yesterday? Click it on the Box, and it stream+plays. (and or, last week/month/entire series/whatever)
No saving it Tivo style, it just streams it from HQ.

Super!

The fact that their broadband is then coupled to a system that they're preparing for HD streaming, is pretty much a super-advantage.. The 50Mb broadband's ready for everything they can throw at me!
I just can't throw it back!
