Samsung U600

Yeay or Nay!?

Recently I purchased a Samsung U600 phone.
It's great!
It's got a 3 Megapixel camera on it, which takes amazing shots, be they distant, or up close. The autofocus works brilliantly, and if things are a little dark, it even has one of those little make-shift LED flashes on it.
It's got a 320x240 res screen so you can fit plenty on it.
It lets you use MP3s as ringtones and text alerts.
And if you really need to, you can use it one of those "phone" things, too.

Great stuff.

Things that are wrong with my phone

Autofocus
The camera's Autofocus can not be shut off. This means, whenever you want to take a photo, you need to wait for it to focus before it'll take the picture.
This is really annoying.

Plinky Plunky Plockity Plooo
The default button-press sounds are so insanely annoying that you'll quickly want to switch them to plain simple "bip" noises.
Except you can't.
You either have "Default Annoying" or not at all.
Head into Sound Settings, Keypad Tone, and just turn it off.

Txt Files
To have a text reader on a phone is quite handy. You can stick e-books on your phone, and read away, to get to sleep.
Except for some inexplicable reason there are two major flaws with the reader.
1. It doesn't have a bookmark option. If you have a 100 page book, get to page 5, and want to come back later.. You're going to have to remember that you were on page 5. Because it won't.
2. Whoever designed it was an idiot. The text reader defaults to A4-paper size, so you can hook it up to a "Pict-bridge" printer, and print off the text.. Handy. Except, it actually means that you can't read the text.. Or at least, not unless you zoom right in, and then constantly scroll left and right in order to read things. You can, of course, switch it to "Size of the screen" mode, but you have to do it each and every time, because it won't save it as an option. Also, it would be slightly better if you could then read it horizontally, rather than vertically.. But since the "fit to screen" stuff was hard for them, I'm sure rotating the view would've been even harder.
(This also happens with PDF's and XML's and whatever else you happen to have.)

... ..... ...... MP3!
Click an MP3, then wait 5 seconds for it to play. Not sure why. Perhaps it has to load the MP3 into memory before it'll play. Either way, delays on playlists are inevitable.

Really Really Touch Sensitive
Halfway through a video file? Don't go near the "Phone down/exit" area of the screen.
Halfway through reading a text? Don't breath on the "Phone down/exit" area of the screen.
Halfway through a Java game? Don't slip your thumb off the d-pad, and if you do, you'd better hope it doesn't land on the "Phone down/exit" area of the screen.
'cos if it does.. Blammo!
The thing quits back to the homescreen, and you're gonna have to start from scratch.

Back = QUIT!
On the right of the screen are 2 buttons. The annoying "phone down/exit" button, that you've trained yourself not EVER to touch, and the less annoying right hand SoftKey, which does as you'd expect. Whatever the proggies doing, this button does the cancel/back thing.
So, inside a text, typing away, and you make a spelling mistake.
Which one will you pick to delete a character?
The one you DON'T EVER TOUCH...
Or the one that says "back"

That's right.. It's the Don't Ever Touch button!

And if you touch the back one, up pops the "Save as a draft : Yes/No" display.
Select yes to save as a draft, and plop you back to the homepage.
Select no to not save, lose all your text, and plop you back to the homepage.
Or... Well... There's not an option not to do either.

So, if you touch the "back" hoping it'll be a backspace, you're out of texting mode.
And if you double tap, hoping to delete two characters.. Not only will it quit out, but you'll have automatically chosen not to save it, either.

NNNGGGHHHH!!!

DON'T PHONE!!
The left hand main button, the "usually green phone" button has it's own annoying issue.
Whilst on the homescreen, breath on the button and up pops recent contacts.
Breath again, and it'll ring them up.
It'll also kindly lock the keypad so you can't go "NOO! NO!! CANCEL!!!"

To do or not to do
Annoyingly there doesn't appear to be a todo list. I had one on my last phone, and it seems like quite an annoying things to be missing.
Not really anything wrong with that.. But.. I'd like to have had one anyway.

And so, there you have it. A short list of annoying "features" that my phone has.
It's still a decent phone, though, and a great camera, too..

power mousey
nice picture, Jay.

I don't think I'm coordinatedly inclined to have and use a cell phone. I tried a few times but it didn't work out for me. I'll just use regular dial and touch tone phones.
So all of you just enjoy your high tech thingies and gadgets. I'm so low tech on this, I'd probably would even use um the telegraph, signal flags and flares and even the pony express too. ;D
