Something simple you can fix yourself?

The drum came away from its main holdy swirly twirly bit.
Electric guy up the street said he could fix it, but it'll keep happening now it's done it. Since we're moving away from him, we can't exactly nip up the street for help in the future, so between us all, we decided a new washer would be best.
Argos offer a "PayPal over 3 Months" thing, so we went for that option, to keep my bank balance from screaming blue murder.

My mums one died 10 days after the warranty ended. She's looking at a Bosch aqua bubble. Said to be perfect and easy for older users.

Believe it or not, God strike me down if I am lying, our washing machine broke today and the error code it is showing appears to be a motor issue.

Watch out, whatever is wrong with Jay's washer is highly contagious!

*edit* I should note we have a paid maintenance plan and have somebody who will be out to look at it Tuesday. May not get fixed then, they may have to order a part, but at least the ball will get rolling. After the Washer issue we are probably going to add the dryer, fridge and stove/oven to the service plan, just to be safe.

New washer arrived at about 17:10, missing out the 12-16 window by a good hour and 10.
But it was free delivery, free fitting, and free removal of your old washer, so I won't be whinging.
God bless you, Argos's's.

Guy just left. He ordered the parts, not sure when they will arrive, but, the next time somebody can get out to install the parts will be November 7th. Gonna be a stinky Kuron by then.

Our service plan does pay for a rental washer, which will be delivered on Saturday. WooHoo! So, have a rental for three weeks! Double WooHoo!

LOL.. Imagine if we did that.
"Sorry, you'll have to pick it up from a different house!"

I am just glad we can get a rental. We will be reimbursed for the rental, but even if we weren't, $103 for a month is much cheaper than we would pay at the laundromat with the amount of laundry we go through.

Waiting on the washer to be here any minute, they are short-staffed so can only deliver it and not install it. But as long as they can get it in the house, I can switch them out.

If my washer breaks. I wil just order a new one and get the old one taken away. New ones are delivered <24 hours. I am not waiting for a couple of weeks to get parts and repairs planned. The company went bust anyway so I am stuck on factory waranty.

I keep money in the account for these situations.

Back many years ago. I had to wait I think it was 6 weeks for Commodore to replace the cia chip in the Amiga 500. We started doing that ourselfs after that.

That is nice, but to buy a new one you have to pay for it.

Under my service plan, we do not pay for repairs and we are reimbursed for a rental. If they ever cannot fix it, we get the money we originally paid for it back and we can then order a new one and pay what little difference there is in price for a new one.

I'd normally try to keep a kitchen appliance alive for as long as I can. Repairs and fixes tend to work really well with them as, for the most part, they're still built with old fashioned tech and not tiny little chips that melt and fudge things up!!
..
But in the case of the washer, it's not been a good ride. We've only had the bloody thing for 3 years, and it's been problem after problem.
When it bust last week ... No, this week... When it bust this week, we had the usual guy look at it and he said it was too big of an issue for a little quick fix, and we agreed.
We normally wouldn't scrap a washer after such a short amount of time.
Prior to that one, we've had 2 washers in this house. The first bought in 1987 just after the house move, and the second early 2000s. Both lasted decent amounts of time, and both were great.
This last one, though. Just awful. Don't buy a cheap washing machine, guys.
Just don't!!!

I think my next washer wil not need that dryer function included. I'm to much of a scrooge I guess to use it. I'm kind of worried at the amount of heat it produces too. The drying rack has been my go to solution.

My mum wil replace her broken one when this years government emergency energy grant has been deposited. Could be any day now.

edit: My previous cheap washer lasted 10 years (and I gave it away because I could not carry it up the stairs myself)

I am with Jay. When Carolyn and I were together and were in the old house, I fixed the fridge and fixed the washing machine twice. That washing machine was great. Upright, direct drive, no belt. Most expensive part on it was the transmission which was only $150.

When we got our new house, my Mom bought us a new washer and dryer. Otherwise we would have taken the old ones over to the new house.

As soon as I got here with Zoe, the stove/oven was not working right. Only the oven worked right. All four burners, the controls, the elements and the sockets the elements go into were all bad. I replaced ALL of that. Works as good as it did when it was brand new.

Front loading washing machines are harder to work on and the parts are far more expensive. Service plan is cheap and covers everything I mentioned in the post above.

I used to fix stereos, tape decks, VCRs, TVs (including replacing the picture tubes), fridge and usually do much of the work on my vehicles. Actually took home appliance repair (and home repairs in general) in high school.

ALso replaced much of the indoor plumbing once I got here with Zoe. New pipes, new faucets everywhere, new freeze proof water faucets for outside, upgraded much of it to PEX and put in shutoff valves under the house for the outside faucets for added protection. And put some mild heating under the house for even more protection against frozen pipes.

Washer is fixed and working. Just need to call the other place and have them come pick up the rental washer. It was really fun last night swapping them around when you are sick.
