Interesting, but not interested enough to watch it. Only caught the original when it became syndicated. Generally do not watch TV now.

That 70s Show was originally an Adult sitcom, meant to hark back to the 70s.
At some point UK channel "Trouble" got the rights, and stripped out a ton of the comedy, leaving it as a shell of what it was.
In the US, it carried on, but over here it was very neutered.
I'm hoping this new series is what it should be, not what it was.

I've heard of the original, but never seen it.

@rockford Humor is subjective. For me, the character "Red" was funny, everybody else was just stupid. Back when I watched TV I mostly watched the Britcoms which were on for a couple of hours every day and the British Mysteries.

Of course comedy is sibjective. It's not just American comedy I don't like though - I can't stand many Britcoms either; eg The Office, The Royle Family, Gavin & Stacey, anything with RickY Gervais in etc. etc. BTW I watch far more American TV than homegrown stuffage.

BTW - I don't even know who "Red" is (I'm guessing he's the character played by Kurtwood Smith?)..

First day that That 70s Show was shown in the UK, and I happened to be lazily flicking through the channels.
It was broadcast on *gasp* Channel Five! And I just happened to flick far enough to catch it.
The mother (Kitty, giving the hug in the thumbnail above) was preparing a secret party for the son (Seen far far at the end of the trailer), and I found myself laughing far too hard at the situation, so stuck with Channel Five *gasp* and enjoyed the first couple of seasons.

It's very much one of those old-skool "stumbled on it" shows that I just happened to catch at just the right moment that it captured my attention.
Honestly, given the type of generic sitcom that it is, I don't think I'd've ever chosen to watch it.

... This all happened about 3 years into the show's run over in the US. First, ITV tried to do a UK remake, and it failed spectacularly.. I think for the very same reasons. It's not really something you'd pick to watch, and ITV didn't really "do" sitcoms anymore. I never saw that, but even thinking about it, it just doesn't feel like it'd work there at all.
I'm glad Channel Five picked it up for those first couple of seasons. Once it moved to "Kid channel Trouble", it definitely found its place, and became more popular, but only ever as a kids show.
Which it wasn't supposed to be!

- I can't stand many Britcoms either

In no particular favoritism order, the Britcoms I watched: Last of the Summer Wine (one of the best shows ever on TV IMHO), Keeping up Appearances, As Time Goes By, Ballykissangel, Waiting for God. Also a fan of the Canadian show called the Red Green Show.

As to the 70s/90s Show... Red is the man in the title screen of the video above. Mostly the show focused on the stoner kids. Not a stoner or into drugs or drinking at all, so it was zero interest to me.

First, ITV tried to do a UK remake, and it failed spectacularly..

Oddly, back in the day many of our classics were based on British shows: All in the Family was based on Till Death Do Us Part, Sanford and Son was based on Steptoe and Son... Office is a modern example...

Our history of comedy is kinda odd. Even in the 70s and 80s, much of the "stars" got their start in Canada. Going back further to the days of old school radio and early TV, stars like Alan Young got their start in Canadian radio doing comedy. America -- Nicking stuff from outer countries and claiming it as our own since our inception...

Yeah, it's that "the stoner kids" bit that does it.
If, going in, I'd've heard/read about the show "about some stoner kids", then absolutely honestly there's no way in hell I'd've watched it.

But that's not what the show is. That does happen.. They have a "circle" in practically every episode. But then they go about their day, or typically it moves on to the next day. Rarely if ever is it a show "about" that. And I can say that honestly, as someone who ended up torrenting it, and has seen and compared a ton of the regular series, compared to the "trimmed for kids" editions that got broadcast over here.
Most, if not all of the snips and cuts are swear/adult related content. Very rarely did they have to cut any "circle" content.
.. which, hopefully goes some way towards suggesting how much of the sitcom revolves around that.

There's a number of drug centric episodes, like the one where the kids bake some brownies for the bake sale, which the parents end up eating. Or the one where the "stash" gets discovered and there's a "not in my house" fight between kids and parents.
But .. those are like, what, 4 or 5 episode from a run of 200?

It's not "about" that.
It's a 70s era sitcom.

I do hope this sequel series doesn't become that.
I have fears that, since the original, it's become this "all about drugs" mantle, and everybody assumes that's what it'll be, so that might end up being what it is.
If it is, I'll likely tune out, because... like Brice says.. I don't wanna watch that.
But I'll give it a go, in the hope that it's actually just a sitcom that just happens to have that as a none-event.

Did you get the 80s Show over there? It may have only lasted a season over here. It was an "inspired by", not a direct spinoff.

Will say this for The 70s Show. I think everybody had somebody in their school who looked like Hyde.

Your old show Till Death Do Us Part, probably had the most impact on our TV and culture than any other show.

It inspired All in the Family, which in turn had numerous spinoffs that was a huge part of the 70s and 80s.

That 80s Show was fun, but it was too close to the current time, so all the "LOL, look at the funny 80s thing" references didn't really work as well.. Most of those things still existed at the time the show was broadcast!!
Every time someone mentions Pat Benatar, my mind instantly springs to that scene where the kid's trying to steal a record and gets caught, only for the shop owner to go.. "Pat Benatar?? Get out!!" and lets him leave with the record.

But, no, we didn't. Torrents are a great thing.

Oh my god, the canned laughter.
We're talking Big Bang Theory levels, here...
I might not get beyond episode one.

Last TV show I downloaded the episodes of and enjoyed was Hell on Wheels and that was back when I lived in MD. But, I come from a railroad family, so a bit of a bias there.

Ok, ploughed ahead.
Got through the first couple of episodes.
.. then another, and I'm up to episode 7 and there's only 10 so I might as well carry on.
It's alright, I guess.

Episode 6 has a weird 90210 parody, where they parody the theme tune, and they do the whole thing, and it takes about a minute.
.. which is really freakin' weird since the show itself is a modern show so has really short opening credits.
The parody credits were about 3 times longer than the credits of the show itself.
So odd.
..
Why?!
Why???!!

*carries on watching the rest of it*

..it's a dull day.

Alright watched it.
If it doesn't return I'm ok with that. It had an ending that works well enough as the finale.
We got a brief reunion with most of the old cast, and I'm ok with that being that.
..
Also, haven't done jack shit today.
I'm ok with that, too.
