For perspective, most would consider George Strait the greatest living country singer. His tweet kinda says it all when it comes to the impact of Vicente Fernández.

Over here, Spanish is very common and it is not unusual to see Spanish movies on the Spanish channels with subtitles. Also not uncommon to listen to Spanish radio stations. And in the 70s, early 80s, if you went into a Mexican restaurant, you would hear many songs by Vicente Fernández being played.

If I were to describe his impact, it would be he was the Mexican equivalent of Dean Martin.

Despite the UK [probably] being closer to Spain than you are to Mexico, I'm surprised that we don't have more Spanish/European music here. We have the odd pop song once in a blue moon (the last Spanish one I actually remember was Las Ketchup from 2002!) .

It's probably more to do with the Mexican population in the U.S. (legal and illegal!) rather than proximity to the country of musical origin. But country music isn't particularly big here either nowadays.
