DopeWars

coming soon to Wii

DopeWars v1.0
Screenshots

This is a port of the DopeWars code base, which is itself a port of the classic game Drug Wars. I am going to be porting this game again to the Wii using C++ with libwiisprite. I wrote it in BASIC first to make the translation easier, since coding and testing is slower on the Wii.

Bug reports are welcome, so that I can fix them before the Wii release.

Latest Update

v1.0 First official release

Updated Zip (10.18.2008)
-Fixed crash bug on highscore read at end of game
-Fixed a bug that didn't end the game if you were killed by cops

I feel rich! $50,000 was my final score. Probably not very good, though... Nice game!

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the game! Thanks for the comments and votes. As for tips, hmmm... let's see

Try to pay off your debt as soon as possible
Deposit all of your cash on the final day to gain interest on it
Having empty pockets keeps the cops away
Try to keep a few coat pockets open at all times in case you happen to find free drugs
Move to dealing cocaine and heroin as soon as possible
Acid is the only drug that doesn't get affected by busts or addicts

The Wii port is now officially underway

Argh! I had $500,000, and then decided to try fighting the cops. Lost it all. What's the point in fighting if you can just run all the time?

Forgot to vote. I give it five points because I very rarely play a showcase for more than half an hour.

And now I got $1,300,000! Good enough for me

Great score, Phoenix

"What's the point in fighting if you can just run all the time?"

Sometimes you'll run into a dead end, and the cops will seize all your dope and half your cash. If you happen to kill all the cops, they won't bother you again for the rest of the game.

Is anyone interested in the source code to the game? I'd like to add online high score support, if anyone that is familiar with that would like to help out.

LOL... A game about drug-dealing ...

The instigators of the world, have already banned games because they think it's a bad influence.

Watch-out Eikon, they might start grilling you next .

|edit| Personally... I think it is just harmless fun, so keep up the good work . |edit|

lol, Steve, I'll be careful

Good news on the Wii front, all of the code (around 1,500 lines) was ported successfully in one day. I was worried about the decision to write it in BASIC first, but it turned out for the best. All I need to do now is get high score file reading/writing done and it will be ready for release. Look for it within the week.

$24,000,000. Read it and weep.

How does one play this on the Wii?

You know what would be really good
and even make the game more realistic
is you have pawn shops,7-11 type of stores and regular
grocery stores. You can buy food and water besides just crack. And stock up on other items too. Like ammo, salt, sugar, cigarettes, precious metals, coffee, soda,
extra medicines for bartering and exchange of services and things that you want and need. And what others want and need.
Maybe thats too much or too realistic.

Thanks for the suggestions koko, but this being a port, I want to keep it as close to the original as possible. Possible expansion for the Wii version includes a 60 and 90 day game, as well as UI skins.

"How does one play this on the Wii?"

You'll need to have the Homebrew Channel installed. Then you place the DopeWarsWii folder in the apps directory of your SD card when it's released

Hi there,

I've been trying to create a "drugs dealing" game off and on for the past 2-3 years, but always gave up because I always wanted to add more and more features.

My QBasic version had shipping, rival gang deals, drug busts, newspaper reports which effected the economy/prices of drugs, bribery of officials. It was a cross-over between the old Howard Marks Smuggling Game (now defunct) and some ideas I had about how to make it more strategic.

The best "dope wars" clone I found was on GeekHideout.com, as it had almost all the ideas I had.

I'm working on another version now. Originally I wanted to create an RPG using the River city Ransom sprites and make a version based upon the "River City Ransom Turf Wars" flash movie (found on newgrounds.com) but I realised its just too much to program, and so now I'm just doing a very basic text version much like yours.

I'm wondering do Blitz Basic games actually work on WII? I never knew that; I thought they were all Flash movies.

Anyhow, very good work!

No, once he's happy with the code, he'll have to redo it all into C so that it works on Wii.

Most of the folk here tend to be able to work quite quickly in Blitz, so when we need to quickly prototype a game, and get the basics up and running, that's where we do it.

Porting it after that is where things usually start to get complicated!

So, good luck with that

Thank you zardon, good luck with your game.

Spot on, Jay. Do you happen to have that new category ready yet? The Wii release might be out tonight depending on how testing goes.

Category's ready, 'tis right at the bottom of the system list when you create a showcase. (/otherwise)
