I generally split up type declaration, reusable code and main game code up, so would be around 4-5 files.
In my RPG i have 5 files.
Main game, Type decs, map editor code, reusable windows, map functions.

I sorted this and used sprintf().
I had trouble with the format but figured it out eventually.
the lcd.putc(12); line resets the cursor to the start point.

i use a slightly different method, a pencil and a pad of paper, often called a note book :P

You should play the original anyway, get back to your roots and play Dune 2 it is the prequel to Command and Conquer.
