A Good 3D Modeller

God damnit, the answers on this thread...

"Well, I just use a mouse. Duh, why u no use teh moose!?!"
"Why don't you buy a mouse?!"
and
"I have a mouse, you're stupid.."

The point isn't "I'm choosing not to use a mouse"
The point is "I could manage to do the basics of this on my Amstrad CPC, before my hand ever wrapped around a mouse."

Since yesterday, I've been trying to find a good 3D modeller that works on a Mac/Browser and that isn't a bucket of shit when trying to use a trackpad instead of a mouse.

Can anyone recommend anything?
Because my head's looking at this issue and going.. "Hey, remember when you couldn't find a good easily useable version of BASIC a couple of years ago, and then JSE became a thing.." and "Hey, that would definitely be a WebGL learning experience.." and "You haven't coded anything substantial in weeks.. Let's a-go!!"
and I really don't want to be doing that, right now...

I lost all of those tools in the move, but my fave way back in the day was AC3D. No idea what it is like now and if it will meet your needs.

My quick attempt a creating a 3d modeller would probably not be suitable. Unless you could mod in anything that you wanted to do?

edit: can not do links!

It's probably a sign that I've started to write out a plan of action for this.
ugh..

Honestly, I'm not sure I want to do this, but now that I've started to think about it, I already have 3 or 4 possible uses for it.

(And URLs don't auto-URL at the very start of a post. I can't remember why I made that rule, but there was something, somewhere, that broke if I dd it.)

PicoCad is on sale right now. It is one of those pico8 apps, but a 3d modeller. These should work in the browser. Picocad is pretty advanced for a pico app. Good for low poly art.

Super easy to learn 3D modeller for MacOS and works perfectly with a trackpad is Cheetah3D ( https://www.cheetah3d.com ). Been using it for years and love it. Not browser based though.

Thanks, Qube, I'll give that a go!

Seems workable, but.. Honestly, this took me FAR too long, and it's only 16 cubes!
Usability wise it seems alright, and I instinctively found myself using keyboard shortcuts that I never knew were pre-programmed into me, for rotating the view and such.
For that it was great!

But trying to make 16 little cubes line up. Having to go into the little position editor for every little cube, and one by one move the numbers to the right places.
Grrr.

So now my head's going back to a semi-DIY approach.

What if I write a webpage tool thing that does what my old "Pixelart to STL" did.
Import pixelart, extrude the pixels, then output a 3D model, that you can import into the render tool of your choice?
That wouldn't be "too" hard, would it?!
I could manage that...
Hmmm...

Maybe use three.js to help render the basic 3D model onscreen, and fart about with depth and such from there.

Sounds like a plan.
Hop to it, Jay!

Lol, you give up too quickly...

Assuming you're using a default cube dimensions ( w=1 h=1 z=1 ) then in the right info panel change 'Snapping' to 'Raster' and set the 'Raster Width' to 1. Your cubes will then move around using the widget arrows in steps which match the dimensions of the cube.

But here's today's platdude pixelart in 3D...

Next I need to add some options so you can scale things, extrude things longer and what not, and also see how easy it is to export it to a standard model. (STL worked before.. wonder if I could do that..?)

Those 3d cube/voxel building apps and even sprite stackers are nice ideas to look at too.

I have this voxel builder app called Goxel installed on my iPad. On itch.io there should be some sprite stackers.

Blockbench is a modeler for minecraft which is pretty populair for simple 3d model art creation.

God damn, the amount of time it's take to get outputs working, today.
Fuxake..

Blender : Hi, we're Blender, we make an awesome tool. Wooo!
Me : OBJ files work with vertices colours!
Blender : Yep, sure does.
MacOS : I can preview your model in 3D with colour.
Me: Woohooo!!
Blender : Hey, cool, colourless.

-=2 hours and multiple attempts later=-

Me : Come on, Blender, I've tried multiple ways.. Here.. Obj with Colour, Materials and More..
Blender : Wow, that's cool. We're ignoring that! Find another way!

-=Another couple of hours and multiple more attempts later=-

Me : OK, here's a PLY with colours set.
Blender : Wow, that's cool. We're also ignoring that! Find another way!

I mean, holy hell, Blender...

I'm knackered now, but .. Look, I got Blender to Render!!!

Hurray!!
Won't open in Cheetah, though. Hmm..
Keep trying, Jay!

Per-Colour extrusion settings, FTW!!
Aye!

Still very beta-ish, and is VERY not optimised yet, so will run hellishly on anything but a kick-ass system.
.. especially if you start adding lots of pixels!!
You can try out the tool here, in your browser, but if you're on anything that isn't plugged in, you should expect your battery to drain at a fairly decent rate!

Sounds like Blender is just as much fun to work with as it always was. I am not a 3D artist and always thought it was just me.

Getting to grips with Blender, slowly but surely.
God damn, the camera controls, though..
"It's easy.. Just hit Ctrl, Alt and Numpad 0"
Yeah, except the MacBook doesn't have an Alt..
..
.... OR A NUMPAD...

May be ripping your nad hairs out over this, but that looks awesome!!

The shadow on the right side of the purple building looks like a side profile of Trump. Especially when full screen.

The next biggest issue is learning to use Blender correctly. Lighting's incredibly wonky on this...

Finally got around to getting the lighting to work in the engine. It causes a bit of odd artefacts in places, but it is much nicer looking.
I might have to add some extra lighting options, now.
And maybe materials!? That might be fun, but also quite tricky.

I've moved the position/scaling into "Tab B".. I now need to add icons up there so they're not just saying "A", "B" and "C"!

still Linkage here

Oh yeah, and there's rotation buttons but they don't do anything yet.

I was going to do an easy "Rotate to become floor" thing, and automagically lock it to "the bottom-most block", but once you add scaling, the floor can be miles away from the "action"..
I need to rethink that..

I love the UI, although the gray buttons at the top (A,B,C) and the ones at the bottom do not fit in the UI theme, too well. Looking good, though. Game and the UI are both well done.

Yeah, I need to decide on a good style for all those buttons. There's about 4 different types of buttons in the interface

I'd ask one of the art AI's to draw me a nice GUI, but they'd all end up bland and lifeless.

MS charges a lot of $$ for bland and lifeless GUI based products.
