Yet another example of Mother Nature fighting back, lately. A massive 8.9 quake's hit Japan, triggering a massive tsunami. ... fuck.. BBC news --- "No Nuclear Leak after earthquake" Is it slightly worrying that that's on the Breaking News banner? I've never seen them mention that before.. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

BBC News says: 1841: The situation at the nuclear reactor at Fukushima seems to be worsening. Japanese authorities are now to release radioactive vapour to ease pressure, AP news agency reports. The Japanese reactors are actually earthquake proof to a substantial degree. All their other reactors automatically shut down and are fine - just this one took a bad hit to the cooling system. By the sounds of things, they should get it fixed soon. The problem here isn't that they have nuclear reactors, it's that this is a bloody massive earthquake, unlike anything seen in a long time.

EVERY contingency was in place. Each nuclear station automatically shut down at the slightest tremor. All that happened was that such a huge quake caught the automated defences off guard. It's the biggest one in years, and it wasn't expected. Since then, the station has been made safe. The only issue now is the coolant, which got a wee bit too hot, and now has to be "safely" (!?) vented off. Not sure how safely you can do that, but that's what they're aiming to do. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

Indeed, just read that! Although the BBC report it in their "We must make this blog look like we've written something" style, meaning the phrase "An explosion!" is just about visible in amongst 20,000 paragraphs of "An Earthquake!" I don't... I wish this hadn't happened to them (or anyone!), but I still can't help but feel they're pretty damn stupid for building nuclear reactors on an island where earthquakes are known to occur. It is kind of akin to the age-old scenario of kids playing soccer outside a glass house, and then everyone being up in arms when the ball eventually hits. Wind, water and sun provide no where near as much electricity. For the same amount of power; nuclear is both a fraction of the cost and takes up a fraction of the amount of land. Wind especially is a bad source of power. Can't work if there is too little wind, can't work if there is too much. They blight large areas with their appearance (millions of windmills) and they take up to 20 years (with no maintenance) to generate the power needed just to build them! |

Jayenkai PR Stunt dickheads get what's comingI think that's a little unfair. It's very common to find "I'll give money if you do x" type of activism. In this case MS have over stepped the line, but only slightly. I don't think it's that bad, and ultimately companies should be praised for giving money to those in need. Partly for actually doing that (Microsoft have given $100,000 more then I have) and as an incentive to do it again in the future. |
