Obama Shuts Down Moon Missions

That's it. Looks like NASA's not taking us back to the moon, or mars for that matter. I'm sure they'll change their mind when Russia, India, China and Japan finish their lunar bases.

It is an awful lot of money just to go somewhere for the sake of going there. The only thing that NASA seem to have learned from previous moon missions is that is extremely dangerous, expensive and boring.

Yeah, we're not exactly rolling in money right now. Things are tight, and we don't "really" need to go to the moon.

It's still there 40 years after we first went there, and it'll be there when the recession's over.

...In about 40 years.

I actually agree with Obama on this one. Going to the moon is completely pointless. It makes more sense to focus on long-term goals, like reaching Alpha Centauri within 2100.

But it does give an impression to the rest of the world. The US is now incapable of staying at the edges of human discovery. They have to take a step back.

Contrast it to the 60s where they were defining to the rest of the world what can be done.

But at least when they finally do go they will be far from alone. Lots of other tourists to chat to around the lunar pool.

I thought a return trip to the moon was pointless when Bush assigned NASA to do it. For starters, we're not going to learn anything new by going there. From what I gather though, Obama is wanting NASA to continue research on next-gen rockets, which the moon return trip started. I think this is good, and the most important part in another moon trip anyways. We can do alot more with higher-payload rockets than we can with a base on the moon, IMO.
