I don't like this game, but figured I might as well finish it anyway, since the control scheme is at least vaguely interesting.

Added to list of possible games. Ta

As for the video, I've done all the SmileBASIC games in one-shot using the Switch's internal recorder thing, so I'm limited to only 30 second clips. I should probably do lengthier videos for them, but I'm 150 in, and I don't exactly feel like going back and fixing them all up, taking more clips, converting them into proper trailers!!
This is just how they are!!

I probably should..
But then I should also probably capture clips and make new trailers for ALL my games, and add those into the archive, too.

And fix up all the games that don't have logos and icons and CoverArt.

Ugh.. It's all spiralling out of control again! Aaaaarrrgghhhghghhh!!!!

Get one of those cheapy 'hdmi video capture' doodads from amazon, there crazy cheap and, well, they work. They just detect as a usb video device, rocord using whatever software you like.

Ok, investigating options.
The downstairs telly, though it has recording buttons on the remote, doesn't appear to let me record anything from an external source, only the TV functionality, once you stick in a USB stick.
The upstairs telly has a record button but doesn't seem to want to record anything.

So, yeah, a dongle would probably be the better option.

Plus, then I'd also have to plug the switch into its dock for the hdmi output!! It's only been in there for extended charges!
I'd also like it to solve more than one issue at a time.. but it wouldn't solve my Amiga recording issue, since that's coming through RGB..
so, that's either a multi-input dongle, or one of those high-res RGB-HDMI upscalers.

Hmmm..

.. it'd be quicker/easier to say "there are previous versions of RetroRaider available." Linkage

Step one : Buy a couple of dongles.

Dongle One seems to work.
SouthSky HDMI to USB capture device. (Amazon : £12.95)

Setup
Megadrive Mini -> HDMI Out -> SouthSky dongle -> USB A -> USB Dongle -> USB-C -> MacBook Air port.
Run Quicktime, tell it to capture, captures fine.
The lag is quite severe though, being around about 1/3rd of a second.
But at least the dongle works.

Device Two does not work
El Cheapo HDMI dongle for a Switch (Amazon : £19.99)

Well, technically it "works".
I can now plug my Switch into my bedroom telly, or indeed my iPad of any other USB outputting device, so that's nice.
It doesn't, however, like being fed into the Capture device. Neither my iPad nor my Switch will work, going back into the Mac.
Tomorrow I'll try it with the original dock instead of this.
Not sure why that might be, but it does mention 4K output, so maybe this is actually doing that (!!?!?) and the new little capture dongle can't cope with it.
*shrugs*

-=-=-

Additional : I could do with some small thin HDMI cables, because the current test cable is bloody thick, chunky, heavy and huge!!!

Right..
That works, but..

1) Giant chunky HDMI chaos!
I need to hunt for a shorter, neater, thinner cable.
Do they make those!?!

2) It definitely needs the dock, and with the giant chunky HDMI cable coming from the Dock, that's more than a little unsightly.

3) I could do with a splitter, maybe? That way I can play normally on the telly, whilst it's recording to the Mac.
(The half-second lag is the reason I'm playing the game as badly as I am in the footage!)

4) God bless Quicktime. Open Quicktime, switch to the dongle, hit record, job done. If I were trying to do this in Windows, I'd be pulling my hair out by now.

5) My 20 year old self is extremely disappointed that I just wrote the phrase "God bless Quicktime".

Been on a cable hunt, and the HDMI cable that came with the WiiU is quite a nice thin flexible one, compared to the massive, thick, chunky Amazon one.
A good start to the day!

I've been trawling Amazon for HDMI splitters, reading reviews and the like, and it seems that I'll need a powered one if I want to hook up a TV and a Capture device at the same time. A lot of the cheaper ones suggest that having them two "display" simultaneously can be tricky. They're apparently meant for one telly or the other without unplugging all the time, not both at once.

Cable Purchases! \o/yeay\o/
USB + HDMI Cable + HDMI Splitter. £15.99

The HDMI footage goes into the Splitter, then one HDMI goes to the TV and the other HDMI goes to the HDMI Capture dongle which is then fed into the MacBook for capturing.
I can now play without lag on the telly, whilst the Mac captures at whatever lagginess it wants to.
Success!
Result : Linkage

The capture is apparently 1280x720 at 60fps, but it doesn't look 60fps.. But maybe that's just the PSClassic/Mini's fault..?
I'll have to do some tests to know for sure.

Other purchases
A few more USB to USBc Dongles, because those are proving to be handy, leaving at the end of various dongles, and ICBA trying to remember which dongle I've left them on!! £6.99
And a USB to "All the Nintendo Handhelds" charge cable, so I can occasionally boost my GBAsp/DS/DSLite/3DS/New 3DS, without constantly trying to find the right charger for the job. £7.49

OK, I think everything's set up correctly, now, for footage recording.

The Micro Consoles (NES, SNES, PS1, Megadrive) are all sitting disconnected, and any time I want to "plug one in", there a dangling HDMI and USB Micro wire, which thankfully fits all four devices equally. Hurray for standards!!

The Switch Dock is now sat on my shelf, along with a permanent HDMI attached.

Both HDMI cables go into a "3 input to 1 output" dongle, which automatically selects the currently switched on device.
That then goes to the "1 input to 2 output" splitter that I got the other day, which feeds the TV and the Capture dongle from a week or so ago, which is normally dangling upwards to the shelf above, but when in use, dangles down to the Mac!!
Good grief, what a god damn mess of wires!!!

I'd like the third input to be the Amiga, but the cheap Scart->HDMI thing I currently have is ... well, it's shit, frankly, and leaves horrible ghosting artefacts everywhere... Yuk.
The "proper" one is usually selling for about £139, so.. That'll be a while before I grab one of those.

Otherwise, capturing is a-go.
A quick test..

Alien Deathmatch - 444XEP3HD

(Game written July 2019!)

I'm fairly sure that's 60fps. It seems smooth.. Again, I'll have to do a full-on flicker test or something, to be sure.
But it's come out nicely enough.

The next step has been about 4 months in the making, and requires me to pluck up the courage to...

Alien Deathmatch Arena

View on YouTube

My previous version of Alien Deathmatch in SmileBASIC was done RIGHT near the start of my journey, and was the ninth game I wrote in the language.
It was kinda bland, was only a single large square and didn't have a good selection of the powerups.

For the first of my Monthly "Give myself a little more time to do things right" SmileBASIC games, I've opted to redo it, but bigger and better.
Alien Deathmatch Arena is the result, and if you compare it with the video a few posts up, you should be able to tell I made a teensy bit of an improvement!

I'd love to do a version in Browsercade, but it really needs twin-thumbsticks, and Browsercade isn't set up for that.
It'd also need compatible touchscreen support, too.
I really do need to fix that..
