As handy as a Bufallo Linkstation is, it's pisspoor slow at writing files.. Great backup once the files are ON there, but you're talking about 10 mb a minute write speeds.. SO frustrating!!

Really... Just tonight I've been swinging a external HDD about from one PC to another like a lasso, connecting it one VM OS to another in OSX... Its been pretty mental!

Either that, or I really really need to look at setting up a network correctly, at the minute, so I can shuffle files about... I've always said I'd learn how to do it, but, never can be arsed to get around to it!

find yourself a little motherboard (I have an intel atom one) and should debian on it, install samba server (a tick box on install) and you have a nice NAS.

Mine runs on a 1.6ghz single core atom with a gig of ram but could easily run it of something slower or older.

I also find myself asking why you need a NAS, as long as you have a couple of machine who regularly need the files, or a media player in my case, its worth it. If you think you will have your PC and it on at the same time just put the drive in your PC, less faffing

Mmmmm, nice idea that!

I have an iMac, with OSX (Obviously), XP SP3 VM, Vista VM, Windows 7 VM and Linux Mint VM. I also have a laptop running Windows 8, as well as the now Raspberry Pi... So, when I'm testing and tweaking, it gets to be a right pain in the arse using my external harddrive!

We've got a ReadyNAS Duo v2 thingy, dead easy to set up and all our devices (Windows, MacOS, Android etc) can access it. Pretty cheapish too

And we've got Ethernet Over Power units too, dead handy if you don't want to drill network cables thru-out the walls
