That's not a splodge. That's abstract realism! It's not that abstract though - honestly, it doesn't take much imagination to see that it's a river with trees and flowers.
That said, I think a lot of the value in these paintings come from the history attached to them.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, I think it looks like the beginning of a waterfall. The idea behind abstract realism is that the viewer's imagination plays a part in determining what the painting represents. And honestly, there are far worse examples of abstraction being used in art (especially in modern art).
