Chrome is actually pretty slow at non-JS, that's why lots of fish (which is just drawing) is so much faster in IE.

Whilst working on PMC I find IE 9 has easily the best canvas implementation (note I'm talking about just the canvas).

I also find that Chrome is kind of unstable at times, especially when dealing with Flash and JS.
