What format(s) do standard DVD player's (normally) support?

I have a .avi file on my computer which I need to burn to a DVD for my Dad and before I go using up all his blank DVDs, I thought I would find out if it will actually play .avis or if I will need to convert it (links appreciated )

A quick look on wiki brought up a mention of mpeg-2. Is this the right format?

Cheers

No, so far as I know DVD player's read vob files, you'll want to use some DVD maker software, such as Windows DVD Maker, Nero, and there's definately some others that I can't think of right now.

Google result, so no guarantees on quality/safety of it, but it should do the trick.
