Erm, Java, chargable... Erm...

www.itassetmanagement.net/2018/05/01/oracle-to-charge-for-java-from-jan-2019/?nabw=1

Anyone heard anything about this, its dated May 1st 2018, so, not new news... I would half expect to hear a lot more about it, as when in 2016 Oracle was going to do the same it caused a bit of a ruffle... Which is understandable really.

This is for commercial organisations when they make use of Oracle Java - installing a license manager just like many other commercial pieces of software now.

For random people like us you don't need this. Anybody (including commercial organisations) can go use OpenJDK anyway.

.. For now!!

Yeah, Oracle paid for Java, and they're seeking ways to make some of it back. It's not enough to have a giant "Oracle Updater" pop up every time any Windows user dares to restart their system.

This is (AGAIK) for Java based hardware, nothing we should (as of yet) be worried about.
Bit.. As always. Be wary of giant corporations!

So does this mean that anyone that makes products for Android devices has to pay a fee, or am I talking bollocks here?

Yeah, I think it's a "If you create something that understands Java, then pay us for *making it" sort of rule.

* Of course, they didn't make it, they just bought it. But Lawyers will be Lawyers..

Won't take long for Java to become obsolete then, unless the fees are reasonable of course.

For "us" lot, there's not issue. Seriously, there's nothing. This is for businesses/corporations only.

Oracle has threatened for quite a while that it will charge for Java - and aim that squarely at the business market - not casual users.

As for Android, this is a special case Google lost the case against Oracle so has to pay shedloads. WE as Android developers do NOT. Google supplies the JRE; so does the phone manufacturers that supply the phones - THAT is where the cost is. It is highly unlikely that Android developers will be burdened with this cost.

So for now, ignore all this - it's corporate politics and Oracle trying to earn more money - from businesses that make "extensive" use of their products.

Java ain't going anywhere!
