The chips are evidently bad in some manner.

A recall is good for some.

I had to return my duo core for problems and the replacement has problems.

Only a bit, they caught it early and no consumers seemed to have been affected yet. Besides the P4 bug actually helped Intel and that was massive.

What P4 Bug?

It might have actually not been in the Pentium 4, and have actually been just the Pentium bug.

Years and years ago there was a bug found with the float point unit in the Pentium which caused it to give the wrong answer on certain calculations. However unlike most CPU bugs that are found, it was very pronounced and could be found just by using Microsoft Calculator. Intel had to produce a massive recall as a result (which cost hundreds of millions of dollars). I believe this is it.

However it helped Intel to move from being only known in the industry to become a house hold name. Intel's handling at the time was criticized, but in hindsight people highly praise the CEO of the time who managed to use the scandal to bring in so much good advertising for Intel.
