Unity Free

https://unity3d.com/unity/download/
Unity is now free.

I was wondering WTF it was, yesterday, (literally yesterday!!) so went hunting, only to find a stupid pricetag attached and never bothered to look any further.

Today it's free!

What a difference a day makes!

Is it any good, who knows, but it does come with a browser plug-in, as well as the ability to make Win and Mac games and the potential for iPhone and Wii (although I'm pretty sure they need a proper license.. .. *shrugs*)

Downloading it now, and will update later.

This is definitely a welcomed move. I've been looking at Unity before and, like you, have been put off by the price tag. Let's see if it lives up to the reputation.

Had a brief look, and seems quite a lot like UnrealEd, but without the nice "build, remove, add, subtract" stuff that made playing around with UnrealEd so much fun.

Maybe I missed it?
*shrugs*

I only had a quick look.

Seems like it could be great for building a decent 3D game, but I don't think it'd keep Platdude, Greenie, Space Monkeys, Blockman or any of my other guys happy.!

That's the impression I got too. 3D still hasn't really caught on with me and it seemed to be a bit 'too much', so it's not something I'll be using in the near future. I bet it's a godsend though if you're unlike me.

Looks OK but eh... something about these sorts of game engines that turn me off from them. I'll tinker with it but it's not the mind blowing end-all revelation i've been looking for

If your company earns more then $100,000 you must upgrade to the expensive pro version, even if you were using the indie version.

They are trying to increase their fan and user base whilst protecting it's enterprise earnings. To me this looks like a very good move.
