Backing Up :-)

My hard drive made a weird clicking sound, so just in case I did a full backup of Ubuntu.

Course, it's Linux, so I just enter one line at the terminal and sit back!

Every file zipped along into a compressed .tgz file on my external hard drive, maintaining permissions and everything.

If my hard drive ever died, I could replace it and unzip the backup file onto the new one, with every last file and installed program working without a single thing left to reinstall or tweak.

And, the backup file is only 2.5 GB. It packed around 15.5 GB into that.

So now, I'm safe to abuse my hard drive without worry.

I'm currently in the processing of setting up a file server at home for that same purpose. One can never have enough disk space, either.

yeah, I plan to get a new external hard drive.

although, I've had my Maxtor 40 gig external for over
5 years. I still have my old Iomega Zip drive too.

iv got a hard drive with XP on it, its 40 gigs i think, and its not dead but its dieing. you turn on the computer and windows will either A. Start and then give you the blue screen of death a little later B. not start at all! after you get the blue screen the computer will no longer recognize the hard drive so you have to use a bootable disc. and then 12 hours later it will come back from the dead only to have the whole thing happen again! i think i should get a new hard drive, but mabey thats being a little drastic...

PowerMousey: Best Buy?

Newegg is cheaper and much more reliable.

Eeek, my hard drive started clicking again today

Though, admittedly, it always seems to happen when I'm downloading something at 250KB/sec, so maybe I need to slow down my Internet!

|edit| Mind you, this is a very fast drive, so I shouldn't really have trouble. |edit|

250KB/sec!!

my AOL snail chugs on the average of
1.5 to about 5 KB/sec for downloading.

Things speed up a little with downloading
cause I also have the Amazing Down intenet downloader
booster. Its not Booster Gold...but it speeds up
my downloads a little bit.

I know...I know. I need some kind of Broadband or DSL.
Especially now too. With all these videos and media
resources to download.

Ouch, 5KB/sec!

But usually, I don't get the full 250KB/sec - just sometimes when I'm lucky with a fast Torrent.

I'm trying to download some rare tracks of Rage Against the Machine playing live, but I'm getting 2 KB/sec tops now

Cheers bro
