You have to pay to get the standard edition of Visual Studio 2005. There's a student discount though, if you're still in school (not sure where you're at). VS comes with and emulator and other tools for developing on the mobile devices, but it is a decent *snip*

Windows Mobile coding is made really easy with the .NET compact framework. It's almost exactly the same as regular .NET, except a few libraries are taken out. I've made a few programs for Windows Mobile using this framework, most noteably an inventory prog*snip*

I meant that, you generally only need threading when you're using an event-driven GUI; that you don't need threading in this instance because he isn't using an event-driven GUI.

Generally multithreading only becomes necessary in C# because its entirely event-driven. Since you can't just have it retrieve packets at one point in the game loop, you have to make a loop on a separate thread to allow for the GUI to function based off of*snip*

Also, a lot of the big projects are split into many different assemblies (dll's) so that a team's work is isolated to their dll, and you only need to update that one dll in the project and it will still run. For java its a little different because they can*snip*
